Default Altamare: $10 Aussie Style Fish and Chips

If you haven't had this dish at Altamare, I highly recommend it. Really good portion size, excellent flavor and as always (at least for me), excellent service.

He presents the finished fare in rectangular wrapped brown butcher paper and unfolds it, exposing the two eight-inch fillets of Heineken battered black tip atop a generous portion of steel cut fries. Tangy homemade dill tartar sauce accompanies it along with malt vinegar and ketchup

I loves me some fish and chips. Thanks for the tip. Sounds good, and the price is right. Wonder what makes it "Aussie Style"?

I forgot to ask what makes the dish Aussie Style. The chef came over and I gushed about how good it was. Nice guy.

    5-7pm, everyday.

You don't like shark or just the thought of eating shark make you say "eeeww"?

It is rather tasty. Like any fish, some are tastier than others. The Black Tip they used when I went tasted like "normal" fish. Very juicy and tender.

I've never had it..well actually I had shark-fin soup in Chinatown once, but I didn't like it. Plus don't you think it's bad karma to eat shark considering they can eat you?

I eat other meats, but I never worry about being attacked by those animals.

I won't eat shark fin soup because of what they do to the sharks. They cut off the fins and discard the rest of the shark. I find that rather cruel.

Cool - I'm going to visit this place if I get homesick for Aussie food However, I doubt it as I want to try all the Cuban and Floribbean food.

    Flake = shark

Actually, I would say this is more British than Aussie because our cuisine was heavily influenced by British food.

Btw, it's pretty funny but there are NO Outback Steak Houses in Australia

I heard Aussies don't care much for Foster's beer either.

Hi Carlos - that's exactly right They prefer imported brands like Heineken, Corona or boutique Aussie brands like Little Creatures.

And Mexicans prefer many other brands over Corona. Go figure.

Ya, Foster's is a marketing myth intended for US markets.

Corona is a decent beer. Not a choice within my top ten, bit ok. Another myth is Mexican's believe is it contains piss.

Probably like elsewhere, there are probably regional differences. Bohemia and Modelo are top sellers. Go to Baja and Pacifica is on tap.

Now if you get into tequilla, then it gets more complex.

In general, Mexico has fine beers. Latin America is not known for good suds. Costa Rica is a nice exception though.

I caught a blacktip shark on the gulf coast this summer and my fishing captain kept it for eats. I never indulged though as I left the next day. It's supposed to be delicious.

Toledo, I love Altamare! That is one of South Beach's long-standing restaurants. They used to be much smaller but they expanded. Thanks for the tip! Could you be my roving reporter and ask them where they get the shark?

The shark fin industry is ridiculous. Imagine throwing away the entire animal just for the fin. I would NEVER EVER eat shark fin soup.

Also, swordfish is contentious. They get wrapped up in tuna fishing nets, etc ; at one point it was banned. I need to review that.

Maria: I was "suckered" into going to Mercadito tonight. I really want the fish and chips again. Oh well.

Regarding where they catch it, I think it says this in the NewTimes article.

*Mexicans usally don't drink corona, and generally don't shoot tequila (sipped warm). Shooting liquor is an American thing.

Ok, I'll take a closer look at the article.

Off topic -- how was Mercadito? And how do Mexicans drink tequila?

I have a blog post coming up about how to properly drink whisky. Scotch whisky, as in the "real" thing. Curious about other drinking customs.
