Default Canned sardines: my new favorite food

In this age of buckling down on expenses and looking fit and healthy, I stumbled upon a new favorite staple: canned sardines! After a little google research, I discovered that these little kippers are just packed with vitamin B, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D, a vitamin most Americans don't get enough of. And at just about $1 a tin, they're a penny pincher's bargain! Mercury isn't such a big deal with these guys because they're smaller fish and it's the bigger, predatory fish that contain the most mercury, so you can munch away and your only concern is the sodium. Anybody else enjoy these? My main challenge these days is keeping my cats at bay...

Dig those. The good old King Oscar Norwegian sardines in olive oil never failed me.

I got some in Louisiana hot sauce. Nice and spicy! My friend Dave said he likes them in hot mustard. Olive oil is another option. It's a great idea when your stomach is craving sushi and your wallet is saying McDonalds.

Not into the mustard ones. I've always found it's better to apply your own hot sauce than have it all already spiced up in the can.

No way dude. Not unless they are for bait while fishing.

They don't appeal to me in the least bit...my grandpa used to eat them though...

I can't stomach them, but they are amazingly good for you. Sardines always feature on the healthy 'superfoods' lists.

A friend from Madrid turned me on to Sardines. Now, I loved that boney structure that disintegrated in your mouth. It seemed logical it was the vertabrae. I questioned him when he removed his. He stated it was the intestine. I still don't believe that tale, but have removed them ever since.

That is the vertebrae, and a wealthy source of vitamin D, which we don't get enough of in our diet. So eat away!

    LOL how funny!

I love sardines too. A great breakfast is a couple of those on a healthy toast like Ezekiel bread drizzled with olive oil.

Doug, in Miami we have Spanish food brands selling all kinds of good stuff like sardines, mussels and squid in ink. Did you ever eat those while here? They're inexpensive. A Cuban recipe for squid with rice uses that canned seafood.

No, Maria, I'm a new convert to sardines! I just tried them a few days ago, and they were much tastier than I thought they would be. I was thinking they would be more like anchovies. I draw the line at squid in ink, though!

All I can say is don"t bother buying the large can with the three finger size sardines. Though meaty, they lack the taste.

Doug, when I am rich and famous please come to my future home in Spain so we can eat these direct from the source! I'll fly you and David there.

The squid and rice dish, aka "black rice" or "black paella" is actually pretty good and economical. The ink has a very briny taste but when mixed with onions, garlic, rice and olive oil it becomes this very fragrant seafood dish.

I grew up with that black ink in my pasta. My old man was from Messina and I'm grateful he brought his tradition to the dinner table.
