I've been coming here every year for a 3 day vacation with my boys for the last 7 or so years, and pretty much every one of the single guys has hooked up while here. Most of the girls are tourists here and they feel more free to do what they want thinking it won't count when they leave. Avoid the smoking hot model types who are just out to be seen and go for the kind of girls you'd go for back home. What's worked out the best in the past is to make friends with a group of girls the first night you're here, then invite them to the beach the next day, meet them out the next night, ect. I don't feel it's any different here than any other city, except for the fact there are a lot of clubs and a lot of girls which are purely eye candy and aren't going waste their time with you.

Now that I'm staying here longterm, I'm not really looking to chase after tourists every weekend at the clubs, I'd love to meet a girl that I could date regularly. So far I've only met tourists when I've gone out. What's the best way to meet local girls? I meet pretty cool girls in bars back home that I end up dating, but there aren't the same kind of bars I'm used to out here. Any suggestions on places to go that I might find a down to earth local girl?

    What a great question.

I say, avoid the tourist places. Go where only locals are. Places like Teds, Montys, The Room, Lost Weekend, Waxys are full of locals, and hardly any tourists. You will meet the normal girls, who actually live and work here, and hopefully meet a cool one.

Starbucks on West and Alton is also full of locals.

Cooler, in addition to Jess' awesome suggestions, see if you can find some activities on meetup.com ... anything from sports to bar crawls and dinners.

Also cooler, are you only in South Beach? What age group are you in? There are awesome local hangouts all over the county.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely hit up those places!

I'm in SB for the winter and Boston for the rest of the year, but will probably live in other parts of the country throughout the year, so I'm trying to find ways to meet people quick when I get into a city since I'll be traveling alone. I've used meetup back home and it's been pretty cool, I'm going to try it here too, looks like there's some good groups. I'm in my mid 30s.

Coolerkid, are you into social media at all? also check Tweetvite and twtvite for local tweetups. Facebook is a good place to find events too.

We are probably going to have a tweetup in mid-February for Social Media Week, organized by social group Miami Rat Pack. We're mostly in your age group :-)

Stay tuned in our Off-Topic section for upcoming social media events.

The best girls you meet here typically don't live here. It's a crual paradox of Miami life, but a sacrifice you make to live in paradise.

Why do you guys think that is? Going out and meeting tourists is fun, but it's a crapshoot whether you'll even find any single girls out to talk to that aren't married, on a bachelorette party, out with their sister, on a girls weekend with boyfriends back home, are tied up with plans all weekend, ect, ect. When I go to the local bars it seems like people go out together in big groups and don't really want others talking to them. Not that I only meet girls in bars, but does make it easy when you're in a new city and don't have a social circle yet. How exactly do people who live in Miami meet and date each other? I did talk to a few locals who also said that dating here was hard so I believe you guys when you say that, I just find it odd. And when I say locals I don't just mean people who live here permanently, I'm just talking about people who are here for more than a weekend.

Mmm, it is a tough one. Maybe you want the guys answers more as guys see it differently. But I am a local gal, and so are my friends. Here is how we met our guys in SoBe...

Gus and Michelle who own this site met when they both worked as waiters in the same restaurant.

My good friend met her current boyfriend at Starbucks, he offered to buy her coffee.

Another friend went to watch the local boys playing soccer, they have been together two years (And it turned out he lives on Fisher Island! Nice one lol)

One did classes at Miami Dade College, and her boyf was in the same class.

I met my boyf at the restaurant he worked at. I was a local and eating there quite often, and the rest as they say...

So, yes I guess dating here can be quite hard. But the above examples have no club or bar involved.

"Natives" are a little different. Like the born-and raised Miamians I've met, the White ones anyway, have been really cool girls. But unless you hang around in circles of white native Miamians who live in Miami (or Unicorns, as I call them) you typically won't meet them as any sane white person who's grown up here leaves.

That said it's all a crapshoot. The girls I've dated I've met all kinds of ways. But it all realyl depends what you are looking for.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I usually rely on friend circles and nightlife to meet girls back home since I don't go to school and I work for myself so can't meet people in the office. So without that I guess I'm gonna have to start hanging out at coffee shops and bookstores, at the least I'll be well read and caffeinated.

Living on the beach, lots of people look for quick hook-ups (mainly with tourists), but it does suck when you really connect with someone and then you realize she's leaving in a week. Another issue with meetings friends and potential love interests is the transience of everyone, which is also common in Miami Beach.
