Is the sand on Miami Beach ever "refilled"?
A friend of mine asked me if the sand on the beach is ever refilled and I honestly do not know.
As we all know sometime in the 60s (right?) Miami Beach has tons of sand shiped in from Thailand to extend the beach.
But this sand must disapear thanks to the waves right?
So is the sand constantly being refilled?

Hopefully RK will give a link, but I believe the Army Corp of Engineers dredged up sand from the ocean floor and refilled the beach with sand in the '70's or 80's, they also changed beach protection patterns, jetty's, etc.
I think they do ongoing refilling.

Wow our sand is from Thailand? That is awesome.

They do in fact do ongoing refilling, but it's not really systematic. The beach up by where I am is almost completely eroded as a result of filling in other parts of the beach. I have a friend who used to work on those projects all the time, but all the beaches in South Florida have some sort of refilling that gets done.

Sorry Fred, was away and did not see your message. You are correct, the sand is not imported from foreign countries, but dredged from offshore. It is done on a regular basis up and down the east coast of Florida along popular beaches. If I am not mistaken there is still a ban on importing sand.
The main refilling that revived Miami Beach was done from 1976 to 1981. You can see the before and after in this photo I found on the web:

Hi All.
Im coming back to Miami this summer for my 3rd time, together with my girlfriend.
We're staying around 17th, and just read this article
Should we rebook our hotel? North of 18th or south of 10th... We love to stay at the beach, but looks like they're closing it down in june.. Are we wrong?
Best Regards
Martin N

@ RK, Is that picture around the Fontainebleau?
@ Martin Not sure how long the refilling takes up or how much of the beach they close down, but it can't be much considering that the beach is the lifeline for tourism down here, and too many businesses depends on it.

Aroudn 17th you should be fine. That's where the most expensive hotels tend to be so those beaches wouldn't really close.

Mario, just north of the Fontainbleau. That's the Castle Beach Club in the foreground, 5400 block of Collins. The beach there today is nowhere near as wide as shown in that "after" photo from the early 1980's.

Yep, that definitely looked like the Castle Beach, but I kept thinking no way, because the beach around there almost reaches the hotels.

I was never worthy of an invitation, but those notorious parties you and your pal Hef hosted over in the Penthouse Showroom in the freewheeling 70's were certainly the talk of the town.

Very nice photo. That Pinto in the driveway brings back many memories.
The photo is captioned incorrectly. There never was a Playboy Club inside the Playboy Plaza Hotel. The Playboy Club at the time was over on Biscayne Blvd.

Didn't know Miami had a Playboy Club.
My father invested in that formulation and took a bath. This must have been lin the 80's.
