Memorial Day mayhem is making national news again this year, but not from where you might expect: it seems a naked man was spotted attacking another man near the MacArthur Causeway on-ramp and then chewing his face off. The naked man was shot and killed by police, while the man with the mauled face was rushed to Jackson Memorial with critical injuries.

On the surveillance footage, it looked like both of them were naked. It still isn't clear if they knew each other or if this was some random attack on a stranger. What a weird start to the holiday weekend!

"I just saw a news report saying the man who was shot was not naked during the altercation. Paramedics on the scene later cut his clothes off to administer treatment leading passers by to think he was naked the whole time."

UPDATE, 5/27: While Miami Police remain tight-lipped about the incident, investigators are asking witnesses to contact authorities. The Herald reports detectives believe the victim may have been homeless and the naked man suffering from "cocaine psychosis," which could have prompted him to remove his clothing.

I'm not anti-police, but I am shocked that the police in Miami don't show more restraint before pulling the trigger. Where was the officer's tazer weapon? The guy was naked and unarmed. Why didn't the officer hit the guy over the head with his billy club? Aren't the police trained to diffuse situations like this, without using deadly force? And this whole "eating the face" part of the story sound very suspect. I want to hear what was really going on.

I also read that the guy who was allegedly getting his face eaten was shot by the police in the crossfire.

The latest I heard on this now says that both men were naked. I thought that from what I saw on the surveillance tape. I know they cut injured people's clothes away once the paramedics arrived, but the footage I saw was from before they got there. And there were two naked guys lying on the sidewalk there.

Well this is a sad story and I must admit first thing I thought was zombie attack when I heard about this story. To what Gus said I understand why the officer discharged his weapon. The average officer is not trained for advanced combat tactics and they are trained to realize that some one hyped up on cocaine can fight through a tazer shot. An aggressor charging you in a fit of drug induced rage poses a threat to you. And that officer wants to go home that night. I do not disapprove of how the officer handled the situation. I do believe SWAT or National Guard should have and would have handled it differently but for the average officer that is what is expected. PS if he was a zombie the only sure way to eliminate the threat is a head shot.

I might be wrong about the "eating the face" part of the story. An eye witness says it was the most gruesome thing he has ever seen:

While Larry Vega rode his bicycle off the MacArthur Causeway on Saturday afternoon, he witnessed something that can only be described as savage: a naked man chewed off the face of another naked man. "And the guy was like tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" he said. "You know it's like the guy just kept eating the other guy away like ripping his skin.

Upon witnessing what he describes as a scene out of a horror movie, Vega managed to flag down a Miami Police officer. "Police officer came over, told him several times to get off and a police officer climbed over the divider and got in front of him and said, 'Get off!' And told him several times and the guy just stood his head up like that with a piece of flesh in his mouth and growled," said Vega.

If the story is true, as the eye witness claims, I have no problem with the officer using of deadly force.

The article is written so poorly, it still makes me question what exactly took place.

If some guy came up to me and tried eating my face... I would probably wreck his life. Or at least do some thing drastic to prevent the face eating. I feel like there is more to the story than has surfaced.

This sounds like that scene from Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal Lecter breaks out of prison. In the book, he talks about using angel dust to get someone to allow him to eat his face. So that's not out of the question.

I do love that all the hype about MDW, and we get a coked up cannibalism attack as the only notable violent crime. I'm sure the UBW folks are relieved.

There's a photo somewhere on the internet of a naked Asian guy getting punched by another guy at WMC in 2011. The Asian guy took something (supposedly angel dust), started raving, took off his clothes, and then started hugging random people telling he loved them. Eventually, he hugged the wrong guy's girlfriend and got clocked, and subsequently arrested.....oh and humiliated on the internet.

Some folks say the cannibal might have been on LSD, which is weird because I thought LSD made people peaceful.

One man was completely naked and the other had no pants on. And yes, he was eating his face.
