Revised forecast says expect a busier hurricane season
Colorado State University researchers have upgraded their Atlantic hurricane and tropical storm forecast for 2012. Back in April, they originally predicted 10 tropical storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes. However, on Friday, they revised their prediction to 13 tropical storms, five hurricanes and two major hurricanes. Don't let that dampen your Florida travel plans, as we usually get several days advance warning if something's headed our way -- just keep a look out the week you expect to visit, and have a plan B, if you need to change your plans at the last minute. As always, our Miami Tour Company city, Everglades, and Key West tours are fully refundable in the event of a hurricane in our area!

If today's weather was anything to go by, I'd say they are right.

Might be right.
There has never been four tropical storms in June till now.
Interestingly enough, there has never been a fourth named storm in June. Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski has more information in this story.
Debby is looming in ....

Is that what we're under right now? It's been raining for days.

Re: Revised forecast says expect a busier hurricane season
And there's more to come, Jess. Tropical Storm Debby could form soon in the Gulf of Mexico. If it gets a name or not, it is expected to bring (more) heavy rain and high waves to Florida, the Weather Channel says.
As Blackford pointed out, there has not been a fourth tropical storm in history occurring before July 1st. Considering this fact, Colorado State University researchers might be right on the money.

It may actually be time to buy a car. There's only so many times I can get drenched on my bicycle!

Re: Revised forecast says expect a busier hurricane season
Do it, Jess. I have a gut feeling this is gonna be a very rainy, stormy season in Florida.
But at the same time - there are so many pluses of not having a car when you live on the beach. Buying gas and paying insurance. Oh, and BUYING the car. Parking. Maintenance, because something always needs fixing. Flat tires. Am I gonna fix this flat tire?
All the shortcuts you can take with a bike. There's always parking. You're more vulnerable on a bike, also in regards to weather conditions. But you get to train your motor coordination and reaction skills, while at the same time getting a workout for your lungs and heart! I guess there's flat tires too, but so many bike shops on Sobe that can quickly fix it for you. Then there's detestable bike thieves, but you just learn to keep an eye on it wherever you lock it up, and of course never leave it outside over night.
The biggest pros for getting a car would be not having to worry about getting drenched by rain or sweat and being able to actually transport stuff more than just a basket's and handlebars' worth. How long have you managed to live car-less in Sobe my dear?

UPDATE: Debby is now a tropical storm, going at 60 mph. However, Debby's future path and intensity are far from certain they say. It's an interesting storm because it came too early for the season.

Debby's is heading the opposite way to us thankfully!
I have lived car less for 4 years now. Other than emergencies (Meltzer, give me your car) I have been fine without one. Rode 15 miles yesterday in those storms!

Yeah this is going to be a rough season it has already been pretty mean for just being thunderstorms. Maybe the bad storms will lessen the severe hurricanes.

Yesterday's storm tracking defied what was actually happening in CFL. It didn't rain at all but Debby has made landfall via the central gulf coast this morning. It's been a steady light rain for the last five hours.
The major influence it's had on me was to stay in bed till 930A. I'm usually barding along with the song birds at 6A walking Chunche.
I'm out of sync and adjusting the norms of my day.
Staying in bed tasting my wife's kisses of of marmalade, toast and tea.
Let it rain.

The rain here messed up my schedule with Jane she will walk briefly into the rain to use the restroom sometimes. But she does not like to go on the longer walks, needed for certain reliefs. So she seems more upset about the rain than myself. I enjoyed a nice swim in the ocean yesterday in some heavy rain, an no sun burn to show for it.

Since I moved here eight years ago, this is the only time I recall that it has rained non-stop for 24hrs here in CFL.
Yesterday I kept it productive doing some needed house chores and a garage clean. I've run out of things to do, so I'm gratefull this is occuring at Wimbledon's opening day.
I'll probably go do an indoor swim later and then take my mother to her Dr appt.
I better see some sun tomorrow or I'll freak.
How's the rain treating you folks down there ? Will it rain on Lebron's parade ? lol

Re: Revised forecast says expect a busier hurricane season
It rained all day Friday and most of Saturday but Sunday and today are now just cloudy and gloomy, no rain thankfully. Still, I wore my ugg boots to work today. June be dammed, it's not the nicest of days and I feel like staying in bed, so ugg boots will have to suffice.

2005, with 28 named storms, was the busiest season on record. And even then, they didn't get up to the C's until July....

The number of storms per year is too few to make any sort of useful statistical inference about the future.

Re: Revised forecast says expect a busier hurricane season

This has been one of the hardest tropical storms to figure out.
As of Sunday morning, we had 29 hrs of continious rain. We got a little reprieve in the late afternoon..... now it looks the the warmth of the gulf's water energized her a bit and we expect more up here.
As a Floridian, I don't mid the rain at all, given I get my sun in the mornings to get my exercise. I tried to defeat this by heading to the indoor pool at one of the amenity centers, but it was closed due to tornado warnings nearby. Even my 7A tee time was canceled. Maybe I'll but on my boots later and get drenched in a wood walk. I feel I need a good sweat.
Tweenty miles North of me in Celebration, a tree came with 1' of squashing a neices' car.
On the bright side, all the lakes are filled to the brim and I'm comfy watching Wimledon
