Also, I could care less if it's $40 or $300 - I just want good food with good conversation. If you can't have that, what's the point of going on a date? I mean, overall, dating is just one big sucky piece of shit. Why torture yourself if you can't at least have a good meal with someone with a functioning brain?

No, you're not. I think you're on the right track.

Ok, since we know what they expect, here's my question for the ladies:

When you've paid, be it $40 or $300 (because Howard, although I haven't dropped $300, I've HAPPILY dropped in excess of $100 for nice dinners and even club expenses for/with ex-boyfriends in the past. Please note this was always my choice and not anything that was expected or requested.), have you expected something* in return from the guy?

*Something can be anything from a future date, to diamonds to the deed.

Suzy, I don't recall ever paying ... not until the guy and I were already a couple and/or had decided to just be friends. But let's say even if I had, I wouldn't expect anything out of the ordinary or particularly special. It was always a matter of sharing expenses or a gesture to give him a break from paying all the time.

Tommy, I don't think your approach was really "wrong" ... I mean it seems like you genuinely wanted to make a good impression and be generous! I've been out with guys who do the same ... at first they spend more money but realistically a girl can't expect a guy to be doing that all the time, unless he is some kind of billionaire. Suzy makes a good point that for some people $300 is a drop in the bucket. Honestly, I don't think a guy should get in way over his head financially just to impress a girl the first time. She wants to be able to see him for who he is and not judge him for what he can/can't afford. (At least that's what we non-materialist girls like to see in a guy.)

Anyway, the real issue here is whether or not a guy should get "some" just because he forked over a lot of dough.

Again, as Suzy put it ... you can get way more BANG for your buck with a hooker!

I'm not sure where you can find non-materialistic girls. Maybe I should start my own dating service, since I don't know or associate with any gold digging floozies, and I've lived here all my life!

Matt -- yeah, that makes sense. But dinner without wine seems so spartan (sigh) ... however, it being a first date, the simplicity of the meal is a good litmus test: if you can get along just fine and concentrate on conversation, it's a good sign for a second date.

Interesting. I normally don't drink on dates, unless it's Italian and only maybe then.

Also, if I am invited out, I always go prepared to split the bill, but do think the guy should pay. After all, he asked. I pay if I ask. Seems fair to me.

    Fair enough Tere...

There was an interesting article in the Herald about being single in Miami.

    Most truthful SoFla line:

There are a lot of beautiful women here competing for that one man. They don't care if he has a girlfriend or wife.

An old roomie used to say 'a guy who was already involved with a woman meant one thing: try harder!'

While the statement is relatively true, the truth is many guys hide their 'status' or significant other from the women they meet.

I need to disagree. When the market was on the top two years ago, Miami was still far down on the list of the expensive areas in this country regarding real estate. You can make a very long list including San Francisco, Honolulu, Seattle, DC,...etc. Miami will never be in level with prices of San Francisco.

You girls are dating the wrong guys! Guys should pick up the tab for a date, always. The only exception if the guy is broke and the girl knowingly invite him to an expensive place. If I guy doesn't try to be a gentleman earlier what do you expect later?

O.k., so I know I'm in a totally different place, but that's the problem with women - bending over backwards for men who are either lying, or not as interested in them, or aren't willing to give them the time and/or attention and/or affection and/or commitment they deserve.

F that, I say! If a man won't bend over backwards for you, move along. Or keep it casual. At the very least, don't make an ass out of yourself! Equal bending or none at all!

Maybe true Veloire but if Miami income levels were at or near San Francisco income levels, our real estate would be more expensive too...well that and if our public transit was as popular or effective as the BART is, as many people wouldn't need cars. It's probably easier and cheaper to buy a home in San Fran than it is here, regardless of the actual figure.

Paying for a meal doesn't make you a gentleman you know...and as some of the comments in this thread have proven, women are gold diggers if we let men pick up the tab and don't offer anything in return...
