Hey ladies, what can you determine about a guy from the shoes he wears?

In an article in today's Miami Herald, a lady named Donna Sozio claims to be an expert in judging men by the shoes they wear.

But to me, it doesn't sound like she has anymore insight than your average woman. Perhaps even less so because she has determined that men who wear shoes without laces are "more of a serious type".

Well, I wear shoes without laces and I'm hardly considered the serious type (at least when you meet me in real life).

In fact, I like shoes without laces because I'm lazy and I'd rather just slip shoes on rather than bend down and tie them.

I would also suggest that men who wear shoes with laces are more uptight than men who wear shoes without laces, their uptightness determined by how tight they tie their laces.

And men who wear shoes without laces are actually more laid-back.

Nevertheless, this woman will no doubt make a small fortune as the shoe expert by capitalizing on women who are trying to figure out men, which we all know, is impossible - just as it is for men to figure out women.

This is what she believes:

• If the shoe is really clean and the stitching moves in one direction, then the person may be balanced or organized.

• If the shoe has cluttered stitching, then the wearer may welcome chaos in his life.

• If the shoe has long laces, then the man has boyish characteristics.

• If he wears no shoelaces, he's more of a serious type.

But maybe you can determine a woman's personality by the type of shoes she wears to say a backyard barbecue.

Some women would wear flip flops. Some would wear low-healed closed toe shoes. And others might wear stilettos.

What aspects of personality would those decisions reveal?

Nevertheless, she makes a good point. Someone who looks put together will make a better impression, overall -- but I don't think we need to read a whole book to realize that.

Honestly, if I met a rich man who was designer-obsessed that would probably turn me off. But a barefoot crackhead on Biscayne won't do it for me either.

Carlos -- I think it all depends on the event. If you're into stilletos (I am) and you go to a BBQ where you *know* you will be standing on grass or dirt -- not smart.

What about guys who wear nothing but flip flops and running shoes? This entire premise is ridiculous because so many extenuating circumstances can affect shoe selection.

It's like people who say you can judge a man by the watch he wears. What if I use my cell phone to tell time?

Hold on there! This is ONE thing you can tell about a man by his shoes.

Let me start back a bit. Most men, even the thoughtless ones, own a variety of shoes, though in many cases it may be limited. They probably have some sneakers, a slip-on or two for work, flip flops or sandals. Maybe more. So, the question is, when do you check them to see what they are wearing to make this determination? While he's at work? While he's shooting hoops? At the bar? At the beach?

But, back to Tere's point. I think you can tell a lot about a man by checking to see if he DOES put thought into what they wear, including their shoes. This would have to be determined over time, of course.

True - overall, you can get an idea about someone by the kind of thought (or lack of thought) they put into what they wear, when they wear it, how they wear it, etc.

But I don't think you can tell much about a guy by his shoes, since no matter what kind of shoe it is, I think the just pick a pair randomly, or for reasons (comfort, price) that have nothing to do with any major personality characteristic.

Donna Sozio dropped by FIU a month back, I went to see her. While her premise sounds fun, you can't really define a guy by his shoes. If a guy is in a hurry, he'll wear whatever comfortable shoes he finds first.

Naw - my male friends wear pumas, and they're all over 30. Age is just a number, so the saying goes...
