    There is petty theft on beaches everywhere, though. It would be more efficient to just put up some strategically-placed signs warning about the possibility of theft, rather than harassing tourists and/or other potential victims.

    Who knows, maybe the thieves pay off the cops to look the other way. I mean, these thieves are making $$$$ every night selling cameras, cell phones, designer purses... at least they have the decency to leave your id.

    Blackberry has a new feature that makes stolen phones totally useless to thieves.

    All phones in the UK have that. Every phone has an IMEi number. If the phone is registered, and you report it as stolen to your phone company, they blacklist the phone, making it completely useless to anyone but you.
