Default Palm Springs, CA Tries to Lure in the Mexican Spring Break Crowd

It used to be a big spring break destination in the 80's, and then, like Fort Lauderdale, they ran them off in the 90s. But due to the economic times, Palm Springs is once again wooing the spring break crowd.

That's right ! Back in the day, the Sherrif ran them out of town with good reason. The breakers thought in was the rite of Spring to flip cars over and pull off girls tops. It got pretty bad.

My wife and I went there during college spring break (we teach) a few years back and were really disappointed. We were expecting some city life and lots of restaurants and though there are many you could compact them all onto one block of Lincoln. 120 degrees in the summer the days in Palm Springs in February/March started out so cold we wore our winter clothes, warmed up to 80 and then when the sun hits the mountain range, around 3, the temp dropped so quickly we lived in the hot tub at our hotel. Its a long time between 3 and dinner time and we got quickly bored. I would've fled the place for San Diego, at least for a couple of days but the weather there was horrific when we were there. We had to leave Thursday afternoon but apparantly thats the "big" night of the week.

I am happy Doug that you have a found a place you like but wonder why you are still attracted to south beach? Other than palm trees I can't think of two more opposite places.

I'm a little eclectic in my tastes, sunaddicted. I like the mellowness and uncomplicatedness of the desert, but the color and vibrancy of South Beach -- as an occasional escape. I agree that if you came to Palm Springs on vacation, you might find a lack of things to keep you occupied, but living here is a very different feel. I have a nice pool here and can sort of time the day to get a little sun in, and with daily errands and work, the rest of my schedule fills up pretty quickly. I also live in an apartment that's twice as nice as anything I could ever afford in South Beach -- plus I'm not stuck in one climate. If it's too hot, I can escape to the woodsy mountains in 45 minutes, or to San Diego or Los Angeles in 2 hours. And, since Dave needs medical marijuana and the state pays me to take care of him (unlike Florida) the question of where to hang my hat for me was a no brainer! Palm Springs is the most bang you'll get for your buck in Southern CA.
