Default Homicide early this morning on South Beach

Well, I guess it was coming. Multiple shootings around 14th and Collins and Washington. I know there is at least one death involved. Two officers injured. So ends UBW...

Let's hope so. A little too late, though.

A friend of mine talked to the police at the scene about an hour ago. The officer said, "Man, if you live here, stay inside today."

Unfortunately, nefrocatracho is right, every year someone seems to get shot...

I can see a cop car blocking off Collins at the Lincoln Rd intersection and apparently it goes down to 14th, and Washington at 13th is blocked off too...

If anyone wants to see what happened go on YouTube and search for "Miami Beach Shooting" the video is right there ( apparently shot from an apartment on Washington).

I hear there were two separate shootings though.. I don't know which one this is.

    Here's the video. Intense.

I was out there Saturday night and I was trampled upon in a stampede when everybody thought there was a shooting, but there was none.

I'm going to be writing something up today on all this.

It's funny, up to this I thought "meh, it was a little worse than Spring Break, but not too bad", I walked around, gave directions to couple of groups of lost partiers and didn't see anything too bad (except for what I'm sure was either a guy with a ton of friends that kept driving by and stopping to chat to him for no more than 30 seconds, or a dealer...).

It's sad that we seem to have at least one shooting every year...

The majority of people of course are just here to have a good time. There is just this element that's here to create problems. Part of the problem as I mentioned in another post is the sheer number of people which I personally think is way more than for other events

Im more than positive that shooting has nothing to do with UBW. Miramar is nowhere near South Beach.

It is a shame to see how things can get so out of hand in south Beach.

toni it's way more than 'just' too much booze - it's much deeper than just a simple explanation....

it has to do with the hiphop culture and how it has evolved. when rap began in the 80's, it was an outcry against social injustice, lack of education & jobs, and the marginalizing of inner city communities, it was socially conscious music with a hard-edge - it was politically incorrect, and used 'hard' language in condemning the 'system' .... but it did not promote and glorify violence.

then, as basic rap evolved into 'hip hop', the lyrics & message started getting much more aggressive & hostile, rappers started getting famous, and wealthy - with the hostility and thug lyrics, and a whole lifestyle rose up from that..... the inner-city youth started to see these thugs as role-models, 'a way out' of the inner cities .... and began to emulate them.

At this point, a lot of current hiphop music has evolved into a glorification of those thugs and the gangsta lifestyle - there's an element of the hip hop culture that thinks violence and aggression and being a "gangsta", is "cool"..... and they're the ones that bring that vibe to any event they take part in.

So although there's plenty of regular people who just want to enjoy the event - it only takes one or two of the 'thugs' and 'gangsta'-wannabe's, to spoil the entire thing with violence and ugliness.

it's a shame cause rap started out to be just the opposite -- it used to be lyrical street-poetry coming out of the inner cities, calling attention to, and pushing back against, ignorance, lack of education, and injustice -- now it's done a complete 180, and it's evolved into glorifying hostility and violence and misogyny.

and this doesn't 'only' happen in Miami - it happens ANYWHERE the modern hiphop/rap people are; and again it's only a few that act like this - but they ruin it for all.

At the Labor Day Caribbean Carnival in Brooklyn NY, which was a long-standing tradition of a fun, enjoyable, cultural event..... it has now also become worse and worse with the shootings, fights, trashing the streets & local homes, etc. There are always a few bad representatives of the hiphop culture who come and mix in with the Caribbean people (who have a long history of street-parties and carnivals with HUGE crowds of people all having a great time dancing in the streets & having fun with no trouble or violence) -- and it is always trouble when these kinds of 'thugs' show up...

sad really.... i loved rap and still love hiphop in general -- but there's so much of it that's just violent misogynistic crap now -- it's like they totally missed the WHOLE message that the original rappers were trying to get out there .... and now it's hard to separate the modern crap from the good stuff anymore.

It sucks how often large celebrations end up leading to violence.

I was 1 block away from it when it happened. I left around 4am... Close call for me. This reminds me of another close call when an Asian guy got shot about 5 mins after i had left with my friends. His car was right next to mine. That happened in Santa Ana, CA, a predominantely low income mexican neighborhood.

I was at a Mardi Gras parade on Rampart Street in New Orleans once and somebody got shot just a few feet away from me. The crowd panicked and started running, but then someone said it was probably just a float backfiring. When we went back, though, someone was stretched out on the ground and the police were coming in from all directions. I think he survived, though. The Times-Picayune (local paper) buried the story until after Mardi Gras was over.

Maybe Miami can't deal with the the nefarious aspect of life as the City of Commerce depicts it can.

Top 40 city at best. Casey Kasem would flucuate it between 34-37 on weekly basis.
