    Question Miami When It Rains

< Edit: this topic was merged from two threads >

    Hi,

I will be in Miami from 16th till 24th and so far the weather forecast does not make me happy (lot of rain forecasted). Is it usually one heavy shower and then sun again or can it happen that it rains for days on and on?

The next question and most important is then, what is there to do in Miami when it is raining? Besides watching NBA Finals and Clubbing in the evening. What should I do during the day when beach is cancelled due to the weather?

I appreciate any Ideas and suggestions that will help me still to have a great week at SoBe .

    Thanks in advance

    Hi VolkerRussia and Carly,

Based on the weather statistics from previous years, June is the second rainiest month of the year. However, it rarely rains all day; it usually starts around 3pm and only lasts for a couple of hours.

We have an discussion going on here, with ideas about what to do when it rains .

Carly, This past week, the sky has been pretty gray and rainy, but like you mentioned about your town, it doesn't last long. Where are you from, by the way? I wouldn't change your travel plans, because this is the way the weather is all summer. And from my recollection, it has never rained on July 4th, so I'm predicting the end of June will be nice! Please don't get mad at me if I am wrong, though.

    Gus......ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME??!?!!!!

Every single July 4 I've been here, without exception, it has rained. Often all day. I wouldn't hold my breath on a dry holiday this year.

As Gus said, though, the rain is typically short-lasting and leaves the evenings without rain but humid as the water evaporates. You'l still get sprinkles and showers here and there, but rarely do you get a day where the rain is neverending. In June, we go get a large share of all-overcast days for some reason, but it's totally hit or miss.

And reading the weather report is pointless as the forecast you see is almost identical every single day of the summer. Sunny, Thunderstorms. High low 90s, low upper 70s. Even if it rains all day or doesn't rain at all.

So, basically, be prepared for rain but know you'll get some sun. Just try and get out of bed earlier rather than later as the clouds tend to roll in around 4. This may be hard after a hard night out. But I suppose that's the trade off.

I hope it rains during the Heat's parade.

    Hi,

Thanks, that keeps me hoping for some sun. Regarding the Miami Heat Games. Where do the locals go to watch in Miami, is there a good bar besides the touristy places, maybe even a public viewing outside. Would be great to know.

Besides that when I read through the articles what to do when it rains, they didn't really help. Staying at home or reading a book or playing computer was not what I had in mind, any other suggestions.

    - Could be a trip to everglades fun even if it rains, or is it pointless then?

    - What is THE must see museum in Miami which I should not miss and would be a good thing if it rains in the afternoon

    - Is it normally raining AND windy, or is it just heavy rain, would be good to know what kind of Umbrella to bring, a shitty but small 5$ from the market is fine, or do you need a decent one to survive outside :-)

    Thanks for helping

Over the years, I recall going to some of 4th of July employee picnics and the weather always being nice. I asked Michelle and her memory is the same, but she did remind me that two years ago, Christy and Jess almost got rained out from watching the fireworks on Ocean Drive, but the weather cleared up, before the display.

This year, I got $10 that says it doesn't rain on the July 4th, before 3pm. Anyone want to take my action?

I agree with you Gus. 4th has always been ok for me.

3 years ago: No rain. I spent the day on Ocean Drive, ate at News Cafe and watched the fireworks. I then went to an all night beach party thrown by the lifeguards. Good times! And no rain.

2 years ago: It rained for a few hours in the afternoon, so we had a pool party and threw water balloons. By the evening it was fine and we again ate at News Cafe and watched the fireworks, then stayed in Teds till 5am. And Christy was there as she managed to sneak Ginger her dog into Teds with us! But still, a good day with hardly any rain.

1 year ago: I actually spent it in Key West and drove back that day. But it didn't rain, and I watched the fireworks from my balcony as my boyf had to work.

So... as far back as I can recall... no rain, other than a few hours one typical Miami afternoon

Last 4th was nice. The one before I had to bartend outdoors and remember getting dumped on for a large part of the afternoon. Then it did clear up at night, but rain was inevitable.

Insofar as museums....The art Museum downtown is cool, as is the Wolfsonian on 10th and Washington. Again, if you're willing to cross the bridge, History Miami downtown is also very interesting. The World Erotic Art Museum on Washington Ave is certainly unique too. past that, bars are always a fun indoor activity as well. And there's a very nice movie theater on Lincoln Road and Alton.

To watch Heat games, go to any bar. It'll be on. I would guess for the away games they'll have watch parties at the AAA downtown, but I cannot confirm that. But, seriously, any bar you go to will have the game and locals watching it. We may not care about sports the entire season, but when a local team is in a championship series the entire city jumps on the bandwagon. Well, most of us anyway. I'm rooting for the Thunder.

I don't think a trip to the Everglades will be a lot of fun in the rain. Maybe a trip to a shopping mall?

A lot of divergence on how people recall things. On average you can expect rain about 40% of the days in early July, though not necessarily all day rain, and no way to tell for any specific day or group of days, of course. Here are the rainfall amounts for July 4 for the last 12 years (in inches):

    2011 0.09
    2010 1.49
    2009 0.86
    2008 0
    2007 0.71
    2006 0
    2005 0
    2004 0.37
    2003 0
    2002 0.34
    2001 0.02
    2000 0.01

so there has been significant rain on 5 of the last 12 July 4'ths, or about 40% of the time. in keeping with expectations.

Let's not be hasty. The numbers I posted are the official NWS data from the airport. If we look at the surface conditions for July 4, 2006, we see the showers were scattered, which explains why you may have seen rain while the airport missed out:

For comparison, the following image shows surface conditions for July 4, 2010, when the rain was widespread:

Hmm Gus Matt is right about the rain I can recall a few rainy July 4ths. The trick is what part of Miami are we talking about I could have clear skies in Little Havana while some one else is getting soaked on Miami Beach. But I might get in on this rainy/dry bet between you and Matt. lol

Miami is the only place I've ever lived where the sun could shine while it was raining. And the storms tend to move on so fast, they're more of a momentary inconvenience than a day-waster.

Absolutely gorgeous! This weather is to die for. Nice and sunny, pretty warm but breezy in the daytime, and the night temps have finally cooled off, even if just the slightest bit. What a dream.

I would like to say "Hopefully it'll stay like this", but rain has already been announced for the days to come.

But let's see what the next two weeks have in store for us. My personal forecast says it's gonna go from super nice sunny-breezy days like today to overcast and rainy days on end, in one-week intervals. The conditions on the 4th of July will either be marvelous altogether or miserably depressing.

If it's pouring I would skip the Everglades but the City Tour or Boat Tour would be good choices instead. If you see a horrid Miami Weather forecast you might want to head to Key West for clearer weather. Sometimes the weather is super nice in the Keys when it's pouring in Miami.

If you get stuck in a rainstorm a golf umbrella is the best, but for regular downpours you can get away with the cheapie umbrellas.

My museum pick for you is the Bass Museum. You could also spend a rainy afternoon shopping in Bal Harbour. That would be my personal pick. There's also a movie theater and bowling alley on Lincoln Rd.

Christy, Bal Harbour is an outdoor mall. Not sure why that'd be fun on a rainy day.

It's outdoors but the walkways are covered. When I originally went there I was expecting it to be sunnier but because of the overhead area it's shady..but they have the overhead area so you can still enjoy it if it's raining. I wouldn't go there during a storm but it's fine for when it's just raining.
