Hi! It is definitely hot enough to tan, but swimming is only for the brave in December! No locals will go in the Ocean, but you will see tourists in the sea, as they come from colder climates and will not mind the cold!

My trip is in two weeks and I'm going to try the beach out .. Water temps should be warmer enough, at least warmer then the water temps up here during the summer times....

Yes, water temps in December range from upper 70's in early Dec to mid 70's in late Dec. Unless it's cloudy and windy it should be fine.

You can get some non-beach worthy days in December. It's a crapshoot, we get cold spells from time to time. Today, for instance, NOT a beach day. But you may find 82 and sunny every day too.

The water is a no-go for anyone from warm-weather.

    Hi Lexi,

My friends are visiting from Russia and had no problem going snorkeling in Key West, yesterday? Then again, they are from Russia and are used to cold weather.

From my experience, the coldest water temps in Miami are about the same as the warmest temps in Southern California.

    Where are you from?

I have gone in the water in january with nothing but a swimsuit, and thought it was fine. But, I grew up in Rhode Island, where the water temperature gets to a maximum of about 68-70 degrees F (20-21 C) in the summer, and much of my swimming was done in water closer to 63-65 F.

If you are accustomed to similar water temps, it will be plenty warm enough in early December. If you are from a very warm climate, then probably not.

Thanks for all your responses. We're from upstate NY, so we are definitely used to cold weather.
