Default An Afternoon at the Charles Deering Estate (Pictures)

The other day, my friend Dave and I took the back roads -- LeJeune and Old Cutler Roads -- down to the Charles Deering Estate. Both the ride and the destination were really great. In addition to the afore-mentioned manatees, we also got to see some interesting architecture, a boardwalk through the mangroves, lots of flowers and some interesting lizards. It was interesting to see what life in Miami was like for a wealthy person in the early 20th Century.

Thanks, Tere! Neither had I. It's a really laidback, hands on place, too. Kind of an informal Vizcaya (which I haven't been to, either).

Wow...That place is pretty nice. Great pictures too. Do you have directions to this place? how far from south beach is it?

Thanks, Nate! It's a little over 20 miles from South Beach. Here's the most direct way to get there from South Beach, but I got off US-1 at LeJeune Road and turned right on Old Cutler Road at the roundabout. I think that way actually goes faster, plus it's prettier and not as much traffic. This is a good place to relax!

As Doug said, the most scenic way to drive to the Deering Estate is taking Old Cutler Road (see: map).

The Estate is open from 10am to 5pm daily.

General admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children (ages 4-14).

Tere or Nate, we have season passes that give free admission for up to 4 people. I'd be happy to meet you there and walk you in.

    I love this place.

Doug taught more about Miami in few months than what I learned in 6 years myself. :-P

I will go with my mom on June.

    Thank you for the pics!!

Thanks, Mirna, but in all fairness, for this one, I have to give proper credit to Gus and Michelle for the suggestion and the use of the "master pass", heh heh!
