Default Dogs rule at Fort De Soto

Without any doubt, Ft. De Soto in Pinellas County is my favorite beach in FL. It boasts seven miles of beaches, history, camp grounds and Turquiose waters. Trip Advisor has distinguised it twice in the last decade as America's best beach. It's North Beach is most pristine and where we usually pitch our shade.

Today however was different. I awarded my little one for good behaviour and took him to the Dog Beach in the park. He knew something was up , as he was antsy watching me load the car with beach stuff. It seemed he knew he was going for an adventure.
Just wish Florida had more such offerings.

Here are some pics of the dog areas of Ft. De Soto taken today.

FDS is a great beach, no doubt. Also home to a few triathlons I believe. I always enjoy checking out beaches in the rest of the state, as a lot of them are much nicer than the ones in South Florida even though they don't get all the publicity.

We have a few gems in the state. No question about that. Even crossing the Sky Bridge in St. Pete will throw into Bradenton which is the gateway to a slew of really nice beaches like Anna Maria and Siesta Key.

Chunche had great day aside from having this fox terrier trying to hump him all day. The dog beach is ok, but FDS other beaches are amazing.

    Default Great pictures!

Fort De Soto looks like a fun beach.

About how far is it from Cape Kennedy?

Cape Kennedy is, I'll say, about a 3 hr drive over from the Atlantic Coast.

Living in the middle, makes it easy to hit both coasts. I prefer heading west.

    Default FT Desoto Revisted

This area of the gulf was visited again this weekend. The North Beach is actually one of the finer beaches I've seen in FL. With success, we snuck Chunche in and had a blissfull day.

Chunche just got back from revisiting the dog beach at Ft De Soto. He's laid on on on cool tile snoring right now. Something I think I'm also ready to do.

    Here's his 200 meter free style ....

Wow that place looks like fun. It's too bad I can't trust my Husky off leash for an instant. The second the leash comes off she's off to the races, and isn't coming back till she feels like it, which can be quite a long time. I just know she would love to swim and play with the other dogs though...

The park counts with two dog areas. One for the small dog and the other for the bigs which is huge. Your dog won't escape. After that, the dog beach is just steps away. He or she will be entertained enough not to go anywhere else.

Contrary what some might say: I think a husky's coat insulates well in Summer. There were two at the beach yesterday.

I think we will try and check it out at some point. But you are absolutely right the coat is good for heat and cold. I've had several people try and recommend shaving her. That is an absolute no no, because not only does that not help her stay cooler it makes sun burn very likely.

How long a trip is that for you from Poinciana to FDS?

Thanks for sharing UTS! I need to make it out there on my next gulf coast trip, hopefully soon for tarpon fishing.

FDS is a historic site named after Hernando de Soto, one of the first Spanish explorers to go deep into the US. He landed near Bradenton and his expedition ended up zig zaging up through the Carolinas, crossed the Mississippi and got as far as Texas in search for gold.

Don't forget to hit up the Dali. This was our first visit at it's new home. Once we discovered it had a parking structure, I bought six bags of ice and laid it out for the dog while we did a quick hit inside.

The Dali alone is worth the trip and tripping off his work is mostly what you'll be doing.

I haven't been to the Dali either. I need to spend a whole week around there! Luckily I have friends in Cape Coral so I can go back and forth.
