I always manage to get cramps in my arches whenever I do the downward facing dog pose.

Dylan, if you are having back issues you should work with a teacher who specializes in restorative yoga and focuses on alignment. Some other forms of yoga might actually do more harm than good.
Doug, are you able to place your heels all the way down?

Bayfront park (downtown) also offers free yoga every Monday and Wednesday at 6:00pm

I have rather short legs and don't contort well. Although I was good at gymnastics when I was a kid...

Oooh..I love your new avatar! I thought you weren't into the wedding at all! People in the US will be waking up at 4am to watch it-not me of course, they'll be re-running it the whole day.
As far as the Flamingo Park yoga, bring a real yoga mat because the grass there is spiky and pokes right through your towel...downward dog is painful!

My new avatar is only for fun, and cos I miss London seeing it all the time on tv.

Laurie, do we know who sponsors the free downtown yoga?
Doug, try doing downward dog with a rolled up towel under your heels. See if that helps. Have you asked a yoga teacher to workshop the pose with you after class a little?

No, I don't go very often. I'll try the rolled up towel next time. I think it's just that I have very flat feet!

I too have flat feet, not to mention bunions (lovely!) from my dancing days. One way to strengthen the arches is to pick up a rolled towel with your toes. You don't have to lift the towel off the floor; just pick up the towel with the toes and then release it.

I'm great at picking things up with my toes. I'm part monkey that way.

Hi Amy, welcome to the forums. I personally don't practice at any studios in that area, but an old teacher of mine owns and runs Ayama Yoga, however they are in the process of relocating. More info here: http://ayamayoga.com/
There is a Bikram studio on 20695 Biscayne Boulevard and another studio called Just Breathe on 170th and Collins. Again, I can't vouch for these, but it should get your started. Let me know if you start practicing around there! Namaste.

Just out of curiousity, when they say "by donation," how much is really the common amount to give? Like I want to try one of these but I also don't wanna deal with that awkwardness.

Re: Outdoor Yoga (Beach, Park, Etc)
When I was teaching at Synergy the suggested amount was minimum $5 for the beach yoga. I think $10 is fair ... a drop-in class at most studios is $20, so figure on that, you're getting it half price. The community class at Green Monkey in South Miami is $7. Really though the whole by donation thing is to give people a chance to practice if they can't pay, so give what you can. It would be very un-yogic for any teacher to complain if it's by donation.
I'm about to try some donation/community classes myself, Matt. There are also FREE yoga classes in town, I'll post those here later. I'll be researching all this in the next few days.
There is a free class followed by cocktails in Coral Gables tomorrow (nice happy hour, huh?) The teacher is the same one Michelle and I took class with at the Deering Estate. If you are interested, PM me.

Oh, I think all classes at Synergy are on the donation system right now. I need to verify that. If I lived on the beach, I'd be taking class there.
