hi, im looking for some help in finding any info about the shoremede hotel, which was on ocean drive and 35th street miami beach, i have old color film of this hotel when my grandparents stayed here back in the late 1930s!i have seen only two pictures of the hotel from the web and i think the us army took over that area for training during the war! many thanks
Are you sure it was on Ocean and 35th? Ocean Drive actually ends at 15th Street... Could it have been Collins Ave, as that is the street next to the beach as you go further up Miami Beach?
The only thing I can find out about the hotel is that Wally Deane, the Elvis of Miami Beach, played there in 1955.
"What a buzz from the past!!! It was 1955 at the Shoremeade Hotel and Wally Deane was on fire!! Wally was the Elvis of Miami Beach. We danced and partied every night, it was great!! Awesome memories!"
Jess, looks like heir nussle is correct about the hotel being located on the Ocean.
I don't believe Ocean Dr ever went beyond 15'th (though I am not 100% sure about way back, maybe someone else will confirm or not). For example, the Roney Palace opened in 1926 and backed up to beach, leaving no room for any road east of Collins. The so-called "MIMO" hotels between 15'th and 21'st (Shelborne, Delano etc.) were mostly built in the 1940's and always backed up to the ocean.
That photo Gus posted says "On the Ocean at 35'th St", meaning Collins and 35'th.
The Shoremede took up the entire oceanside block of Collins Ave. between 35th and 36th Streets. It was designed by architect Roy F. France for members of the Mead family and it opened on January 3, 1937. If you search "Shoremede" on eBay you will find a number of post cards and advertisements.
