    Cool Tamiami Airport info needed

    hi there,

Im planning to move to miami by the 2nd week of march, I will be there studying for my pilot license.
Unfortunately my school is based near Tamiami executive aiport so kinda have an idea that its out of the way of everything (beach etc.)

Well just looking for accommodation options , areas recommended.

Although i will be without my own transportation for the first month or so, would it be a possibility to stay in areas such as south beach and coral gables (south beach preferably) and commute to my school on a daily basis on public transport options, if not is there any agencies where you can hire chauffeurs on the short term.

Also student medical insurance....any recommendations? I dont think my school has its own medical center so what options would be the best.

your feedback would be much appreciated,

    thanks

Would not even be in the realm of possible to stay anywhere interesting and commute to that airport via public transportation.

Sorry, but the bus system here is a joke and takes FOREVER. You're looking at abour 1.5-2 hours each way on a bus. And that's assuming light traffic and no delays. Not practical at all until you have a car.

Honeslty, nothing is really practical to that place if you don't have a car, save for maybe the Holiday Inn across the street. Look in West Kendall as apartments in that area may at least provide you with a relatively short bus ride to the Kendall-Tamiami airport. That area is so spread out, I don't believe there's any apartment buildings that you could walk from.

Look for apartments near SW 136th St and SW 137th Ave. I believe both have bus lines on them.

    Thanks for the reply!!!
Guess i better look in to buying a used car for the short haul, even though i will be there to study, i dont think i will be able to coup being so isolated from the beautiful things Miami has to offer.
Can you tell me what's the procedure of buying a car there for a foreigner(UK).
And is it even possible to buy one with a foreign license?

And to stay on topic i know this has been asked here before, any agencies or trusted websites you recommend to search for short term furnished apartments and prices am i expected to pay.

I live near KTMB and I agree with Matt: nothing there except the Holiday Inn and it is appallingly expensive as there is nothing over here for any tourist. Without a car you are doomed.

Foreigners are doomed twice. You will pay quadruple insurance (as you have no credit rating and FL drivers license) and need to pay up everything right away (as you have no credit rating) and even getting your car tag costs a lot (several hundred dollars). Count on 200-250 dollars per month for insurance to start with. It may drop after 6 months.

Even high school students here drive cars.

The good thing is that you can get basically everywhere with a car from KTMB in about 30-40 minutes, Miami Beach included, as long as you don't commute there.

Ask your school for residence options. I bet they have names of appartments for rent that they may even have a deal with.

If you have a car, you can temporarily rent accomodation at Shamrock. Not cheap, but totally OK, and you may consider sharing an appartment with fellow students. http://www.shamrockcorp.com/kendall.htm
