    Here's what you do:

Take the phone back, and get an at&t phone, pronto.
    Carry OFF, mossy repellent everywhere.
Live in SoBe. What's the point of living in Miami if you aren't near the beach?
Get used to commuting. I am from London and went to work every day on the tube so it doesn't phase me at all.
Stick around on this forum, it's a great place to vent, make friends, laugh and learn stuff!

And T Mobile should have checked the coverage in your area, that's what they did for me. So they suck, and owe you a refund. And if they give you trouble, say, I know I sound English but I LIVE here. That usually helps.

Hahahahha...Well I didn't buy a phone fortunately, just took the plan which was 60 dollars, so not cheap! It was the only network I could get internet with on pay as you go and I thought having streetmap would be helpful when I'm out and about and lost!

A friend gave me the details for a realtor and i've contacted him to see if he has anything in SoBe. I want to pay about $1600 for a studio or one bed in a high-rise secure building within walking distance to things. Will that be possible on my budget?

Totally. Negotiate price and don't give up if you get a flaky realtor. The apartment I live in was advertised over $100 more than what I pay. I just talked them down.
metro PCS might have a phone plan for you. And I still say go back to t mobile and get a refund.

Plus, as I don't have a social security number yet, so the assistant in the shop was saying that I would most likely have to pay a security deposit of a couple of hundred dollars too.. So it was all stacking up!
That's very similar to what they told me at the Miracle Mile AT&T store. I decided to get a GoPhone plan to try it out. I used an AT&T phone at first but it was horrible. I ended up using my O2 mobile instead that I brought back with me from England and it worked much better. Yes, I lived in England too.

And this apartment's selling point is that it is a garden apartment and shows people sitting around a patio table socialising!! No chance of that!
My phone had no signal in my Brickell apartment either. I had to go to the lobby every time I wanted to make a call and I rarely had any calls come through unless my phone was in one of 2 places. I was considering buying a 3G Microcell to boost the signal (Some people have gotten them for free). Unfortunately, I left Miami before I had a chance to fix it. However, I did buy a Microcell for my office and it worked like a charm.

    Yes, its pretty infuriating!
I knocked on the door of the couple downstairs to ask them if they got a signal.. They said no one gets any signal in this building or the others close by..Everyone has to go on the street and I'd see other people if I went out to make calls lol! He then proceeded to tell me about dead zones or something similar sounding and how in Massachusetts he had to drive a mile to get out of the dead zone..I am learning new things about the USA everyday!!

You should be able to get a studio or a small 1-bed in a mid-range building for $1600/mo and a 6+ month lease. Keep your expectations realistic, some tradeoff in location, quality of building, view etc will be necessary.

I also think you should stay someplace closer to campus. You don't want to trade doing well in school for living it up while in school.

Anyone have any experience of living in art deco buildings?
I like them as they seem to have a bit more character than the hotel-style high rises..But I always think that they look a bit unsafe..As if someone could just break the window and walk in! I don't know if that's a crazy thing to think!

Hahaha..I know- I don't want to be flunking at the expense of living by the beach! I want to test it out though for this semester and then it'll be summer anyhow..
I took Jess' advice and took the metrorail and bus to SoBe today and it didn't take so long..Maybe I could read my notes on the bus everyday!

I was there one year of undergrad, then two years of teaching. Never made it in under 90 minutes on the bus to Metrorail, but it may depend on how far in the beach you have to go.

Art Deco buildings tend to be older, so you won't find the amenities like dishwashers, in-unit wahser dryers, garbage disposal, and cable capabiliites like you would in newer buildings .The apartments are also generally smaller and you will get a lot more bugs than in highrises. Also, parking is harder.

But insofar as safety it's not that bad. No worse than any other type of low-rise building anywhere in the city. Christy, a form member here, has had some problems with the smaller art deco buildings. I lived in one and it was fine. But I don't mind bugs.

Good luck with your commute. I hated it, especially when you consider meeting for group work, social life with other students (who mostly won't live on the Beach) and meetings with professors. Also if you end up with any sort of assistanceship, you'll be working there too. So you may find 3 days turns into 5 fairly quickly. Having done it, I advise against it. But people never listen to me here anyway.

It's always good to get different views from people..So I appreciate hearing about your experiences Matt.

Tomorrow I am going to view some studios in the South tower of the Flamingo as it seems the least hassle free way of finding a place..Though I met a couple today who lived there for 18 months and they were telling me it's a nut house! I asked them to explain further and they said it's like a dorm-filled with people who are on permanent vacation..But I don't have the time to start looking for places as classes start tomorrow too and I'm not good at multi-tasking, especially when relying on public transport!

The thing is about the Flamingo, it's a party building. So as long as you are ok with that, and the noise, and the occasional porn movie being filmed there (not kidding), then you will like it. It is just as those people described, a dorm crowd on a permanent vacation. Have you looked at The Mirador, Waverley, South Beach Towers, all of these are on West Ave and all are high rises.

I had friends who had a great Studio almost 1 bedroom on Euclid, well within walking distance to the beach, and to shops including Publix. However it was a low 2 or 3 story building and they always had to fight for parking at night. But they only paid about $1200 or $1300 a month.

They film porn everywhere in Miami, even Monument Island. So if you're trying to avoid that, it'll be tough.....

The Flamingo is livable, for sure. But definitely a big place for partiers and people with weird schedules. A lot of service-industry types and people on long, long vacations. Never ask where the money comes from. If you wanna kind of experience that, since it's sort of a South Beach "thing," try it out. Though in grad school that may prove tough.

What are you going to grad school for?

    Hey Giddy,

My experience in Miami consists of one awesome week in 2005. If I were to move there, first place I'd look is Brickell. Centrally located, the train to UM is super easy and because no one rides it other than Matt, you and he can talk about the pressures of Grad school and how you have a ton of room to stretch out on the rail. Plus because it takes about a half hour, it's time to chill and not worry about driving on the roads with a bunch of south american's and really old new yorkers. Plus, Brickell isn't that far from the beach, so on those off days when you really want to go to the beach you can add that time to your travel but on a daily/regular basis, limit your commute time. Plus you never know who you'll hook up with who has a car and can maybe make those trips to the beach a bit easier ... other than finding parking. I'd stay away from anyone with a Saturn or BMW (total douche bags in the states).

The other place I'd live is Key Biscayne, totally chill but probably pretty pricey. The beach at the state park you wouldn't even know you were basically in the middle of Miami if you hadn't just left it. I think it's a toll road though so that could get annoying. I don't really remember other than the beach there is really quiet.

Hey Matt, why doesn't anyone seem to live in Coconut Grove? Seemed decent and even closer for the UM crowd.

    Thanks for all the tips!
I am doing a liberal arts degree so this semester my classes are in philosophy and art history..Today was my first class and I felt super old (i keep hearing the word super and now it has become a part of my vocab too!) ..I probably brought the average age in the room up by over a decade!! I am beginning to think it was a mistake to go back to university at my age..the only thing I have in my favour is that I look young thankfully..Though there was one other woman in her 50's so I felt better!! I'll see what tomorrows's class brings..
On top of that I may soon be living in a dorm at the Flamingo...god help me..........

Joe-You're not alone in telling me to choose Brickell but I was living in Paris before moving here and don't want to be in a city environment, plus Paris is much prettier!

Southgate towers was another place that I was interested in but some friends said that was a big NO as they practically got thrown out as it was suddenly undergoing construction..

I'll look at the other places mentioned by Jess but will have to see if they're furnished...I'm going to the Flamingo tomorrow and will see if the studios are any good..I want something furnished with internet/cable and Flamingo is one of the rare places that offers that..

No way you're too old for university. The best (most serious and interested) students are 30+. Just push the party crowd aside and sit front row. At least you are there because you want to study, not because your parents have put you there.

The Mirador building provides cable and internet. My old art deco studio did also. You will easily find apartments that provide both, especially in high rises. The Mirador has 3 buildings also. See how you like the Flamingo, but keep your options open.
