I also think building a tropy asset (economics be damned) is another component.
The new gaudy Skyscraper project SkyRise Miami is being built by EB-5 money. A lot of new projects are built using this, as its a great way to spur development from wealthy non-americans who want permanent residence. Except this project is just purely tourist attraction (no residential component) and will block the view of many residents at Marina Blue and 900 Biscayne.

don't go by the weather apps--they are like Mapquest (i.e.telling you to get on and off exit ramps that do not exist....out of my 28 days spent in Miami, there was rain a grand total of 3 days that lasted a combined 45 minutes in total....according to my weather app, it predicted thunderstorms 12 of the 28 days.

Yes, a few high-rise hotels in LA are using EB-5 money as well.

That skyrise project does look gaudy. I like the overall idea of getting something iconic on the waterfront but that design is hideous. I guess the Eiffel tower was also called hideous when it was first built.

Miami deserves something more elegant...with all that beautiful historical Art Deco design across the bay you'd think they could have come up with the something a lot nicer.

They say the odds of that getting finished are slim thanks to the FAA....I thank god every day we built the airport where we did or who knows how awful this city could look.

I read he received FAA approval and that led another downtown building receiving a plus 60 story building getting FAA approval also.

4Seasons will no longer be the tallest building in the South!

I read the FAA approved it as well. Anyway, I think a lot Miami's new skyline looks nice. Just not a fan of that Skyrise project.

I am going to add one to your list: the silly antiquated last call hours that are still state law in California (2am). Apparently, a relic of the World War II era when the concern was a potential bombing of west coast cities by the Japanese. In 2013, a bill to extend last call to 4am died in legislative committee. Meanwhile, cities like San Fran, LA and San Diego lose convention business to cities like Vegas and Miami Beach.

Yup, we can drink as long as we like

Although we have consequences from it… like trying to drive to work at 5am, and avoiding all the DUI's waiting to happen.

Big plus vs LA: No Pidgeons.

I've only seen them once in Miami and once in Cocoa ..... other wise you'd see hawks for hire killing them off buildings like some parts of LA- especially Glendale.

    I like that the design.

The one's that have a view of the " guady" port shoudn't having this building in that direct line.

There's no last call in Europe, when I tell friends back home (Belgium) that there's some last calls in North America they don't believe me ...
That's what I like too about Miami, it's more permissive and like Europe for that, 2am last call just kills all the fun ...
I remember some party in some bars in Belgium where we were still dancing at 8am ,it was still crowed and people didnt need drug or anything, just beers

That's one thing i hated about living in Orlando. It was 5am when I was still young and a big party place. A lot of famous 90s DJs came out of Orlando or frequented the area. Then the laws changed, 2AM kicked in with a 1:45AM last call and everyone went South. And clubs are dead at 10:30/11:00PM so you have like 2 hours of partying before leaving...Whack!

Last year an attempt was made to extend last call another hour in Orlando. There was a qualifier involved that limited it to a few places. The disadvantaged rightfully protested and it never went through.

Don't know about today, but in my howling days in LA, after-parties where just as good or better than the night out.

What I like about this site/forum--you guys are critical and give me the bad with the good...that's called an honest assessment.

This is in direct contrast to some of the San Diego forums (Tripadvisor, City Data, Chowhound) I contribute on--god forbid anyone makes a critical comment related to that town, you get the 4 year-old infantile "if you don't like it here, why don't you leave" response. But then again, these are the same people who took to heart the Tripadvisor poll rating San Diego as the #1 city in the USA for pizza (those tourists from Norman, Oklahoma who responded to the poll really know their pizza) and the same ones who feel everyone in the world wants to live there...OK--when I see condos selling for $50M,$30M and $20M, as they do in Miami, then I will know such is the case.

Appreciate the ability to knock something on this forum and not be attacked like one of the homogeneous munchkins from The Wizard of Oz...keep the honest assessments coming--it's important to people such as myself who need to know everything about Miami so they can make an informed decision about relocating there.

The " other " site air brushes the Port of Miami off the picture in their web site header. Not here at MB411.

if you did that here in SD you would be ostracized....heck, when I grew up in NY if you did not knock the place people would think there's something wrong with you...always good to go through life with 2 feet on the ground, not 2 feet above it (when you fall, it hurts less).

Anyhoo, looks like my only decisions are (1) not if to move to Miami but when and (2) where--SoBe v. Brickell....if SoBe, would be on the bay side (Waverly/Belle Isle/Sunset Harbour area) with pluses being I am at the beach, walkable, Lincoln Road Mall + So Pointe Park, and Standard Hotel pool membership = nice lifestyle...downside = gyms suck in SoBe (unless you are in newer $1M+ condo building) and $150K more expensive and older building than Brickell.....if Brickell, newer building, more bang for the buck, closer to other areas (Coral Gables, Grove, Wynwood, Midtown, etc), great gym (Sports Club LA), but much more congested...not sure Brickell Key is a happy medium between the two but is also under consideration. Boils down to beach v.urban lifestyle....debating whether, at age 55, it makes sense to take on the additional $150K of debt (beach)--probably could swing it and you only live once.
