Default Closest surfing beach to the University of Miami

    Hi,
I am from Austria and I am going to study in fall 09 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. As I am a enthusiast surfer I want to spend as many time in the water as possible ;-. Nevertheless I want to improve my english and have a good time too!

So, might be somebody can help me!?
How far is the closest surf spot from the UM?
And is it possible to go there by bicycle or will I need a car?

    Thanks for any information!

    regards,
    Alex

DUDE! You'll definitely need a car Alex! How will you carry the surfboard on a bike?

All jokes aside, welcome to our forum!

Unfortunately the closest place for you to surf would be Miami Beach and those are pretty sad waves. Most of South Florida is waveless thanks to the Bahamas. They block all those winds that allow waves to make it this far. For real waves, you'll really need a car as the closest spot with decent waves is about 2 hours way in Port St Lucie.

Question: where did you surf in Austria?

Since you are a newbie, I guess it might be safe to assume that you haven't heard about the Dade County Surf Forecast... You can get all your surf related info there.

    Hang 10 Dude!

At first thank you for the information. It will take me a lot of time to organize my term abroad but I have a few months time left.

Obviously its not possible to surf in Austria, unless you surf in a river. But I travelled a lot in the last few years. Hence I have surfed in almost every country except (Great Britan) on the European atlantic coast. Moreover I have been twice in Costs Rica and I am going this February to Costa Rica again!

And you're not scared of sharks?

I've been on a surfboard once. (I tell this story so many times...)

It was with a former beau who LOVED surfing and was trying to teach me. As we were in the water, something dark swam below and he explained it was a shark and not to worry.

    Not to worry?!?!?!?

Let's just say he had to swim back in with TWO boards.

    Hi, Alex, welcome to MiamiBeach411.

Sorry to report, you won't find any consistent surf in Miami. The only time there's waves is in the Fall, during hurricane season.

To answer your question, the closest break to UM is in South Beach at 1st Street, in front of Nikki Beach. There's also a break up in Bal Harbour on the north and south side of the Haulover Inlet.

Sadly, the ocean in Miami is completely flat fpr most of the year.

You can find more info about the surf characteristics on our Ocean Rescue page...

I've taken two surf trips to Costa Rica.

There's also waves in Panama and Puerto Rico.

Have you done in wind or kite surfing?

That reminds me Gus, there is a big kite surfing group up by Matheson Hammock. When the wind picks up, it's amazing to see what they do!

Did your ex-beau experience a momentary lapse of reason at the time?

No Miami Rents A Lot, his momentary lapse in judgment is what made him an ex. %-P
