Default Moving from Nashville, Need job and safe place to stay

Hello everyone. I am planning on moving to Miami sometimes between July and August. I have no idea where to begin. I have visited the city many many times and would like to make it my permanent home. I am planning to go to FIU of UM law in 2008. Until then I need a job and a safe yet affordable place to stay. I am a 23 y.o. female so safety is a huge concern. Also I have a chihuahua that will be moving so the place must accept pets. I will glady accept any help and suggestions

    Hi, abrown11, thanks for posting.

The easiest (and most profitable) jobs are in the service and hospitality industry. In South Beach, it's not uncommon for a waiter or bartender to make $200+ a night in tips. Keep in mind, Florida law allows business owners to pay tipped employees $3.65 per hour.

The Miami New Times is a good resource to find a job. Do you have a friend here who can mail you a copy?

I suggest moving to Miami Beach, or close to your school.

What is your budget for an apartment?

    Are you tracking craigslist?

Do you plan to visit before you move?

Here are some related links about renting in Miami. That section should give you a good overview of what to expect.

I've never been to Nashville. I imagine a relaxed, rural lifestyle.

Why are you going to law school in Miami?

    Lastly, you said:

"I am planning to go to FIU of UM law in 2008."
Aren't FIU and UM two different schools?

    Sorry for so many questions.

I would also suggest moving close to school! Less traffic means more study time! %-P

    :-)
As a new member, I was so excited to actually see people reply to my post.

Yes Um and FIU are different schools, that was my typo. I am applying to both universities. As far as working is concerned, I have been looking into the alternative teaching certification program. I think something like that would be more my speed. I was surprised though to see how much servers make there, but I dont think thats for me. Does any one know what neighborhoods are close to FIU or UM? I have been checking Craigslist regularly, but most people are looking to rent right away, so I dont know how helpful it will be to me right now.

Hi abrown11, welcome! To get your bearings on where FIU and U of M are, google University of Miami and click "Maps". You'll get a good feel for exactly where the schools are.

The neighborhoods close by are South Miami (that's what I call it), Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, and Sweetwater is near FIU. These areas are very busy with lots of shops, restaurants, people, and traffic.

Let us know if you have any other questions. :)

For UM you should look into Coral Gables and for FIU you should look into either Kendall or South Miami. Both areas around the universities are fairly nice and you shouldnt have a problem finding an apt.
