Rihan, it would be awesome if you could start a new thread about your future adventures in South Africa in the "general discussion" group, but in this thread, somebody just wanted to know about Miami and where to live with kids.

RihanJ i dont think you have a very good worldview, i am half african and half german and i don't think you have any clue what living and "making a living" in africa is like, or anywhere else considering you still live at home, not trying to be mean but i don't think your experience in miami shores and africa is going to help this family find a place to live in miami

My daughter (age 23) and her daughter (age 3) are moving to Miami. I appreciate reading all the posts I have read so far (aside from the person who doesn't seem to like Miami). More importantly to me is where shouldn't she move to. We live in Minnesota (aka MinneSNOWta). All metro areas have their crime areas, but if any of you could provide areas that she should not move to you would ease this mother's concern. I realize she is grown so please I do not need or want to be lectured on that (I get that from family). I just want them to be safe as possible. Also she is looking to rent, how is that in Miami? Thanks!

Most people are aware of the natural beauty of SA,but considering living there, the black poverty, crime & HIV make it undesirable...

Okay - not talking about moving to SA (South Africia). Want to know what places in MIAMI people would not suggest my daughter and granddaughter moving to. Thanks!

From what I have read in other, lower quality forums, there was a unanimous agreement about

    Hialeah,
    Opa Locka,
    Little Havana,

    as being districts to avoid...

There were contradictory arguments about downtown Miami, Brickell,Kendall...

    All praised

    Coral Gables,
    Pinecrest,
    Aventura

& of course all islands...with Fisher Island & Key Biscaine on top

    many praised

    Coconut Grove,

    Miami Beach,apart from some spots...

For parents with children,in my mind,Miami Beach must be the best place.

Kids can play " all day " on the beach or in the shallow water, where no sharks enter,

& the parents can watch them from the balkony...

Such an arrangment costs 2k/month minimum for rent of a true direct oceanview apt...

Unfortunately ,Mi does not have Texas style affordable gated communities, like Sienna Plantation in Houston...

In Mi,there are very few & very expensive ...

    But then,nowhere else u get Januaries at 16 C (I hate Fahrenheit...),

    when Athens,GR is at 8 & Houston at 9...

    Hi djdnumber7,

I would love to help you with an answer. Sorry about this thread going haywire. We try to keep things on-topic but sometimes it's impossible.

It would help to know if your daughter already has secured employment and what part of town that's in. Also, will your granddaughter be of school age by the time they move here? Is she married or will be living with someone? Will she have a car? There are many factors on choosing a place to live. The more information you give us, the better we can advise you. Miami-Dade county is huge and sprawling, so we need to narrow things down.

As for rentals, they are pretty much everywhere. There are gated communities here, some are extremely exclusive while others more accessible.

Miami Beach is not necessarily the best place to live and yet there are areas of Little Havana that are ok. Again, see above -- the best place to live depends on many factors.

Rebecca ... thank you doll! I heart you too! :-)

Maria's advice here is the best. There are some general areas to avoid (Little Havana is not really one of them) but there are sooooo many other factors to consider when picking a part of town to live in.

And you also need to understand that people from America thinking about moving here because they are tired of cold need to understand that living here is VERY difficult. So you need to hear from people who tell you the bad parts about the city because you will encounter them. There's a reason so few people last more than a couple of years here, and if folks know the downsides going in they may not pick up their whole lives just to do it again in 20 months.
