Default I'm Clueless about Nightclubs, and now I Need HELP!

Well, now it's my turn to ask for help with the nightclubs!

My BFF is getting married in 2 weeks, and there'll be about 12-20 men & women in my age range in town (mainly from NYC and CA). I've met some of them, and they're really nice people, and my BFF and I want to give them a SoBe nightclub experience. We want to get a table or two and just have a fun night out dancing. Most of these people have never been here, so we'd like it to be the kind of experience they'll love and feel like they got a good taste of SoBe.

But of course, I haven't got a clue what clubs to go to! I have no idea which are currently the hot ones, or which ones will be pleasant to deal with. I'm not even going to pretend we're the hottest, hippest people around, and I REALLY don't want to deal with any douchebaggery. We're a decent-sized group, we've got money to spend... so what do you all suggest??

    Thanks!

    Hey Tere!

It all depends on what kind of night you want. My suggestions would be these:

For a more laid back night, where you and your friends can actually converse, hang out and have a good time without all the SoBe drama, I would suggest either Nikki Beach on the Sunday, or Plunge at the Ganservoort. We all had fun when we went to Plunge, and you can sit round and chat etc. Nikki on a Sunday, you could go earlier in the day and get bottle service on one of the big beds for everyone, or go later and have it in the VIP.

If you want more clubby, I would say try Set or Liv if you don't want the douchebags as you say!

Any of these sound like they could work for you guys?

Thanks, Jess. I think I'd like to do Nikki Beach myself! But I forgot to mention that this is for Friday night... I suppose that matters, no? Set or Liv might work, though... do I just call and put us on a list, saying we want a couple of tables?

No to Nikki on the Friday.

I like Set but its small. Liv will be more $$$... But see what else people suggest, everyone likes different places on 411. :)

    Hey Tere,

I'm going to suggest mynt for you and your friends. It's not too big, great music, it has a second room, and there's always a great crowd. Check out their website - myntlounge.com
It's always house music, and sometimes there's a live performance. Thurs and Fri are mynt's big nights.

Good luck with your outing tere!

I'm sure you're planning to 'take us along' by reporting how you make reservations, how you are treated and (if you feel confortable with it) about how much it ends up costing. As you can imagine, it would be a great help and interest to everyone!

Most important, HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, sungal! Added Mynt to the list....

Fred, great idea! I'd be happy to share the process here. I've lived here my whole life and have never done this!

It's because you have always lived here. Like me living in London...did I ever see the sights? No.

Sungal...do you think Mynt with all those people though? We have fun cos we go in a small group. I'd think with 20 people, I'd want a bigger club.

Mynt is much smaller than SET. Both are very swanky, so you must dress to impress.

I am not sure what Cameo is doing these days, but in terms of layout, it is one of my favorite clubs.

How hardcore are you about the "club" thing? Because there is also the Florida Room at the Delano, which generally has live music. Or the upstairs at Van Dyke, which always does live Jazz, but it is small.

What kind of music are you guys into?

My friends who live in SoFi are always tweeting about how much fun they're having at Macondo whenever they go there, well into the wee hours. They play latin/Crossover music.

They are a couple in their 30s. While attractive, they are not model types. I don't know if there's any BS at the door however.

Actually, Macondo is the only club in SoBe I've been wanting to check out, because of the Latin music and dancing. If you go, please keep me posted on the experience.

I think mynt would be great for Tere and friends. With that many people you may have to get another table.. The other reason I recommend mynt is because about 60% of people are doing bottle service, so you can hang out on a comfy couch and table, but still be part of the action. You're not seperated in a VIP section, which is nice.

Same here, I've been wanting to check it out ever since a user posted about it last year. I just figured i should actually maybe go learn how to dance first before going.

You picked SET, Mynt, and Liv as your 3 picks... for 12-20 people in their 30's? you def need to have a back up plan and let everyone know its gonna cost money. you pick the 3 very hardest clubs to get into. If one or 2 guys are wearing tshirts or sneakers or 1 or 2 girls are a little meaty its gonna be a no go at set for sure and most likely at mynt also, liv will still let them in but raise the minimum up a couple thousand And for 12-20 good people they are going to ask for 2500-5000 minimum, this is now busy season, so no more 2 bottle minimums

Id pick a swanky lounge, or at least have a backup lounge or 2. my personal choice would be start at Mondrian for sunset party on friday then as it gets around 11 head to plunge the rooftop of gansevoort. Both places are beautiful, trendy, fun, and you'll actually all be able to hear each other talk. wish you a great time on your night out :-)

Holy crap, Tommy ... minimum in the thousands? Thanks for chiming in here.

I like the idea of the Mondrian sunset party, esp. if the weather is nice.

Let’s go next time you’re here! It may not all be partner-based dancing, esp. if its crossover music. I believe Macondo is Colombian so the dancing style is different than salsa when it is partner-based. Don’t know where there are lessons for that. Better to learn as you go along!

Im going to Colombia in March, i'll see if i cant learn anything while im down there. Its looking like i might be home most if not all of the summer so i might go take lessons at that one place on lincoln. Something i've always wanted to do.

Wpns, that's cool! Let's start a new thread if we want to discuss Latin dance further. :-)

Tere, I know this will sound terribly gauche compared to the places we are talking about here, but Purdy Lounge can always be your last resort backup. Though crowded and noisy, meaty women are allowed, men can wear casual clothes, no cover and drinks pretty cheap. Music is good, too. Heck, you can always hit it up last even if you go somewhere else.

I believe Purdy has VIP service in the backroom. I can't imagine it being as expensive as the other clubs.

See, this is why I needed this thread! I'm getting great advice/insight here! I mean, I can tell you that this group (nor I!) does not have thousands of dollars to spend on this, so that was really helpful to know!

I like the Mondrian/Plunge idea (though, did you all hear that Gansevoort's going up for foreclosure auction??); I'll discuss with my BFF. I've met only a few of these people, so I can't overall attest to everyone's hotness, just my own. %-P

Maria, I LOVE Purdy, it's my fave spot on the beach, and I've had it in back of my mind just in case. I think the challenge is how large the group is - I can see why any club would want to charge us $$$$$, but it's not an option to be THAT high rollin'.

I did not know this?? So is it closing?

Tere, I'm sure wherever you pick will be fun as you'll be with a great group of people. When I go out with my friends, it doesn't matter where we go as we always have fun together.

True, Jess, this is going to be fun no matter what! And I DO love playing hostess!

Not sure what's going to happen with Gansevoort - there's an article in the Herald, but I haven't read it yet. I imagine that for now, it's all status quo.
