You you girls prefer bars or nightclubs? I think that's the first thing to know because we really have all types of nightlife here.

Hi irish-gal! Welcome to the forums!
My first question to you would be: are you over 21? That will determine our answers.
-
hey guys!
matt - we love all types of nightlife... in dublin we normally hit a few bars then a club so whatever works in miami is good for us!
maria - we are all over 21... between 25 and 30!

Great! My next question is ... where are you staying? Sorry for all the questions (we're supposed to be giving you answers!) but Miami is a very big sprawling city. There are many bars I would recommend for gals traveling but want to make sure you're going to be within cab or walking distance.
Others here can help you with the club scene. That's more their thing.

If I'm in town, we can have you over, crank up the Cheiftans and dance the jig.

we're staying at the catalina on collin's avenue in south beach... is that good or bad?

Hi Irishgal! Lovely name!
Staying at the Catalina is excellent. It's on 17th and Collins, which is a nice area. I'm pretty sure I've been to the Catalina pool (or maybe it was the Maxine, it's sister hotel nextdoor). Does the Catalina have a pool on the roofdeck?
It's a nice hotel, but because it's not beachfront, it's less expensive than the larger ones. As far as location you're right next to the Delano and Shore Club (great lobby/pool bars in the evening), plus Gansevort is on 23rd and the W is close to that. So you're within walking distance of great loungey nightlife.
For hot men-
Mynt on Thurs and Fri
the volleyball area on Ocean between 8th and 6th.
at Sunday pool parties, but usually with the even hotter models
My fav clubs/bars/nightspots
Mynt
Delano lobby
Shoreclub Rumbar
Segafredo Espresso
Mansion
Casa Tua
Ted's (Ted's is more local)
For dining there are great spots on Lincoln Rd (3 min walk for you)
My pics are: Sushi Samba, El Rancho, Spris, and Pizza Rustica (not fancy), and Icebox for dessert!
And definately take a walk along Ocean Dr.
Don't forget the sunscreen!

sungal - thank you so so so much for all the really detailed info. i really appreciate it! luckily we're staying at the maxine (supposedly part of the catalina) and i think the roofdeck pool is on the dorset part of the hotel. can't wait to try out all your recommendations!

Oh, you're right! On Sunday you should definately do a pool pary or Nikki Beach. Your choices are Shore Club (rowdy, young, and fun), Mondrion (more sophisticated but fun), or Nikki. Once in awhile the Gansevort has pool parties..I think Sat.
I forgot to add that SET and the Clevelandar are popular. The Clevelandar is outdoors and you can go casual if you want. It's more of a bar than a club.
Seriously avoid the guys on the beach who give out bracelets to clubs and tell you it's VIP. I think it's a scam. Fabian, any thoughts on this? Instead I'd contact some of the promoters on this site to make club entry easy..not that you have to worry to much because you're girls.

The pool party at the shore club is not rowdy anymore, different promoters from last year, different crowd being allowed inside. if you are a guy you will need to bring a attractive lady friend or purchase a table. Not my rules, just letting you know. All ID's are being scanned, so if you are underage, its a no go! The Gansevoort may not be doing anything for awhile until they figure out their $$ situation.
Regarding your concern about the bands. YES stay away from them, they do not work but advertise the clubs, they do not get you in for free or reduced. This past weekend I saw a bunch of girls with numerous bands on their wrist, well guess what, those girls waited a long time to get in and paid (not saying they wouldn't pay otherwise if they are tourists, heck most floridians (unless you are in the biz) pay to go to clubs in other countries and cities). Why did they wait? It looked foolish to have 8-10 bands on their wrists and it shows they are not really serious about entering to stay at "XYZ" club.

All those suggestions are good. For bars, yes, Ted's is a good locals spot. But all it's really good for is spotting locals (not many hot guys there). Other bars to try would be The Abbey up near Alton for great local beer. Zeke's and Finnegan's on Lincoln Road are also good bars to start at. Finnegan's on Ocean Drive is good as well. You should hit The Clevelander on 10th and Ocean at least once early on. it's a fun outdoor bar scene, and if you like it you can keep going back.
I'm a fan of Playwright and Waxy O''Conner's, both Irish bars on 13th and Washington. But coming from Ireland that may not be your thing.
The places I mentioned are all casual bar spots, and less expensive than the clubs and nice hotels. Good places to start the night.

Hi Irish gal, I was going to recommend the same bars Matt recommended but he beat me to it.
The Abbey is closing so it may not be open by the time you get here. If you enjoy specialty beers/ales try Abraxas or The Room, both of which are south of fifth avenue and are good spots to meet locals, though as Matt suggested before, not really pick up spots like clubs.
If you get tired of the club scene or it gets too expensive, Jazzid on Washington Avenue is a great lounge/bar for local live music. And if you want to experience some really good live Afro-Cuban music try the hotel Astor on Thursdays (call beforehand to confirm). No cover and it starts pretty early so you can still hit other spots afterward. There is also a tiny little piano bar under the Ritz Carlton on Lincoln Road. Good place to go before going out as well. And don't forget upstairs at the Van Dyke (Lincoln Road), which also offers live music.
I think no South Beach visit is complete without a visit to the best dive bar, Club Deuce. Between these bars and the club/bars mentioned above, you should have a very well-rounded nightlife experience!
For eats I would recommend Rancho Grande (Mexican) Sushi Doraku (pricier), Pizza Rustica (cheap & fast) -- all on Lincoln Road. (There are also two Pizza Rustica's on Washington Avenue.) The 11th Street Diner on Washington Avenue is great for those late night post-club meals.
I would also recommend one stop at Monty's on Alton Road for a nice and reasonably priced lunch by the marina. This is the closest you get to waterfront eating/drinking in South Beach without it being a scene or too expensive.
Everything mentioned here is walking or cab distance from your hotel.
Be careful if you go out on the beach at night. DO NOT take your belongings with you except your hotel key. There are purse snatchers everywhere out on the sand by the water.
