Roth or Hagar?... Just kidding. The real question is Lennon or McCarthy?
... Just kidding. The real question is Lennon or McCarthy ?
Though both lent the penning of each other's songs, it's pretty easy to know who wrote what.
The Lennon/McCarthy question and who I favored depended on my mood. I associate myself equally with their music. If you put a gun to my head, I'd probably side with McCarthy as I consider myself more on the romatic edge. It's really a tough call.
As you get older, you begin to listen to songs differently. That's were George Harrison begins to grow on me. That's when the musical score and guitar licks become more important than a larynx.
Once we take a tiime out from Paul's playfull lyrics and Lennon's intellect it boils down to the music.
GH never got his critical due. Hopefully the grand HBO special comming out in October will elevate him among the duo. He in fact was their top musician and the main foreman of the music we hear on elevators today.
Ringo is another case and my favorite Beatle.

Hager over Roth. .... And Hager over McCarty, Lennon, or Harrison. I'm not a Beatles fan, and I can't Drive 55. ... Ringo was okay.

... not a Beatlenik myself but I'll give them their due. I can't listen to any of their songs back to back with maybe the exception of Glass Onion. Dear Prudence prob. my favorite song of theirs.
Actually prefer the Stones for R&R and Zep still remains my go-to music.
I guess we're the product of music we listened to growing up. I like Hager but prefer Roth. My opinion has to be jaded as I rocked with the Van Halen's when they were still a local band at the Starwood. . By the time Hager joined, Van Halen's imprint on rock was finished business.

Isn't it Hagar? Are you talking about Sammy Hagar?

I think we grew up about the same time, and I'm probably not much younger than you. I just prefer Hager to Roth. Once in a while, I think the replacement is better than the original. Hager over Roth. Godfather II over Godfather I. Fuel injected over carbed. But, yaa, most times the orginals are the best.
Onto anpther group, .... prefer Aerosmith over VH, in general.

Sorry for the vowel misplacement. I'd appreciate if you can edit the title.
Thank you.

I graduated HS in 79. Based on prior info, I might have a few years on you but not in wisdom.
That was a confusing year. I was bred on rock and dabbled in disco, even a American Bandstand appearence or two. Lets not forget David Bowie. His music was hot on the dance floor back then and way ahead of his times.
Never got off on Aerosmith but love Steve Tyler. In my book I'm comparing them with the Pretenders.
Today has been pretty nostalgic. My Bro-in-law visited. He's a few years younger than me and we've recollected LA's rock past. It would be groovy if Miami had a Rock culture and a venue or few.
That was then G, today I'm more into Jazz. I'll probably graduate to opera and classical as I get older. For right now I still listen and appreciate the old classics.

Okay, you got a few laps around the sun on me. I graduated from HS in '84. Janet has a year on me, and was HS class of '83. I tease her and call her my "cougar", being I'm younger than she is. She's a big Aerosmith fan, and also a bit of a metal head.
Yes, Miami needs a rock scene / rock venue. Miami clubs, or maybe I should say Miami Beach clubs, seem to revolve primarily around only 2 types of music ..... Electronic/House and Hip Hop.

Miami only has Churchill's which caters to rock, metal, punk, indie, you name it.

Hagar was a better vocalist, Roth was a better showman. I call it a tie.
@ Glenn, Godfather I is the best.

Roth was definitely the better showman. I can't say technically that Hagar was the better vocalist because I'm not knowledgeable enough about their ranges and nothing is really standing out in my mind. It's difficult to picture Hagar doing Diver Down or even 1984 (which is definitely where Roth's showmanship took center stage). But then, it's almost impossible to picture Roth singing "Three Lock Box" or "High Hopes" (not VH tunes, but definitely Hagar anthems.)
I like them both in their own right. Though Roth gets all kinds of bonus points in my book for his EP Crazy from the Heat.
(I have no opinion on Lennon v. McCartney.)

SoFL got a gig on 10Apr.
The band is back on tour with Roth at the helm.
I don't go exactly ga-ga with the band, but I go way back with them at local rock clubs before they hit the big time, and it's more nostalgia than anything else. Eddie does certainly can rip them cords as well as anybody.
With four FL dates, I'll probably go to the more rock oriented Tampa venue.
Old Rockers don't die. They keep on rollin.

Just dumped my Tampa tix for a marginal profit and reloaded for the Orlando showing.
I know Miami isn't into rock music and doesn't produce this genre well, but this is the best we got these days.
This is probably Miami's version of VH ....

I'll be ready to ROCK THE CRADLE this Saturday in Tampa near the catwalk. Should be able to get some good snaps to share with the forum.
Kool and the Gang has been warming up the crowd playing ten sets. Time for some Hollywood Swinging.

Re: Roth or Hagar ?
Roth. And not just because he was Jewish. I don't even like Van Halen all that much, but the songs I do like are all Roth tunes.
And it's McCartney, not McCarthy. I saw Lennon and McCarthy and I thought you were talking about communism.

Matt - I must have been a Red Scare frame of mind. Too bad I didn't It would have been really cool if I named Lenin as well.
In regards to Van Halen, I catch your drift. I did realize, while in HS, they were kiind of bubbly gummy.
Fortunately or not, I did hit-up venues to see these cats at places that allowed the underage. It's part nostaglia, and part there is really no dominant rock group out there today.
Their latest LP is actually pretty hot.
If their current tour was laced with " Cabo Wabo," I would have passed. Nevertheless, I'm pumped up Roth has re-integrated. The same could probably be true if Freger was still alive and The Knack went on tour. - It was just part of the rock scene that I actually participated in before their stages got bigger. Van Halen are Pasadena boys. The Knack was my neighborhood. Fairfax H and all that.
VH takes the stage in Orlando tonight, which would have been more convenient for me. Got nice whiffs during my times in Tampa..... might be this state's " rock and roll" capitol. Figure I'd rather party with a better crowd.

Yeah I get it on the nostaligia trip. If I'd grown up going to rock clubs on the strip, I"d love seeing those bands still out there today. Sadly, I don't see myself going to see George Acosta when he's 60 because I remember seeing him at Shadow Lounge in 99.

Re: Roth or Hagar?... Just kidding. The real question is Lennon or McCarthy?
This has turned into a very funny, confusing thread to follow, with some great observations on classic rock (my favorite)
Lennon and McCartney complimented each other very well, for a time. It's hard to say which one was better. Wings went on to make some great music, and so did John and Yoko.
Mr. Oakes, that Dj Zparky remix was horrible. This is how "Ain't talkin bout love" is supposed to sound:
I don't think Sammy could have ever gotten away with wearing assless chaps, like Dave has on.

Re: John Lennon or Paul McCartney?
If you really loved the Beatles - how can you have a favorite? They were what they were as a whole. It's like trying to answer "Which leg do you prefer, your right or your left one?"
All members contributed to what we know as The Beatles and to the magical music they created. After they each went their own ways, John did amazing stuff and so did Paul. They each had their style. I'd say Paul was more of a romantic (ballad-writer), so I feel a bit more of a pull towards him. But then there's John's (I don't even know where to start, but I will) "Mind Games" or "#9 Dream". I mean, I want to name my daughter "Julia" just because of John's "Julia".
Now, one of my top-five favorite Beatles songs was written by neither John nor Paul, but by George Harrison: "Here Comes The Sun". He was just so great with the guitar. George also wrote "Something" and later on (solo-career) "Got My Mind Set On You".
I'd never pick a favorite.
