Hialeah Park
If anyone is interested, I'm thinking of attending a few races at Hialeah on Friday January 20th.
Something easy like lunch and three-four races.

I might be interested. I just won a grant to make 5 short films about Hialeah and that is my deadline however.

Remember, they are quarter horses, not T breds. Be sure and get there for the Flight of the Flamingoes - I think after the 4th race. you can call or web to find out for sure. Latin bistro across from main entrance used to be excellent; 20 yrs ago, now downsized, but menu looks good. pick up a Cubano Sandwich on way out. Asking my horse blog friend for successful qtr hoss sires, so you will have an inkling on who to bet on. will let you know.......... clocker

That is a slight draw back, but I've always wanted to walk on those grounds. I understand the thoroughbred liscense is still in the works.
On rare occasions back when, I'd hit the QH and trotters at Los Alamitos. Nothing serious with just minimal bets.
Does Hialeah have satellite wagering ?
Lets do Maria !!!

I'm in. Any excuse to hit up Hialeah. Though it kinda depresses me because the place is so beautiful, and you walk around thinking how great it must have been 30-40 years ago. Like DelMar, I'd imagine, with a not as nice view.
Never bet on the QH's before. But I'm not above betting on anything.

Matt: Even back when it was open, there I was, on the L Coast studying my Racing Forum, understanding there was a romantic significance to a HIA past performance. Don't know if it was the Citation statue, the flamingos or a Godfather scene. It was one place I wished I experienced back in it's glory.

It was like Del Mar, really. Except instead of a view of the Ocean there was a train station and a hospital.

I've never seen the coastline from Del Mar. Must have been a high grandstand seat.
What I have done a couple of times is, walk across the parking lot to the beach after hitting a daily double and just chill protecting my winnings. I'm was the type of guy that would be selective in my bets and sit things out.
This day at Hialeah will be different as my minimal betting budget is something I don't mind throwing down the drain. I don't know how to handle QH unless Trotter gives us a stable secret.
Trotter mentions some decent lucnh options at Hialeah. I'm tinkering with the idea of pre-gamming at La Perrada de Edgar for a few Colombian dogs before I head inland. Anyone in ? You game Matt for a Colombian ? Like Bourdain, I'll order the typical " colombian" and go off the wall with some tutti frutti sh!t for seconds. My treat !

I'll go with you, but I don't eat things I don't like. So I'm down, I'll just order some beers and drink my lunch.

Does anybody know where I can buy a Racing Forum in Miami ?
I want to al least act as smart as these guys when I lose my wagers. Also, as I'm not a QH guy, HIA has simulcast wagering for Aqueduct, and if I have anything left, might leave a bet at Santa Anita. Time to show Matt I own the 6 1/2 down the hill turf course.
Also looking forward to those Colombian dogs .....

Looking at some Hialeah memories via youtube. Each time more convinced this park needs to be fully restored and updated.
Here's a cool silent video of opening day in 1932. Really looking forward to taking this in.

You can buy a form at Books and Books. Lemme know when you're in town I'll pick one up.

I'm in. I thought I was going to be out of town, but that is actually in March. Got a little confused.

Re: Hialeah Park
So we all in? I say we make it super authentic and take the Metrorail up from Brickell.

I totally embrace the idea.
So far, it looks like we got a trio of guys, and maybe Maria to keep us in check.
As far as logistics, Carlos can park in my building, or I can pick him up. We swing to Lake Panacoast and get you, then get some Colombian dogs. Thereafter, back to Brickell to lay the car down, and metro it.
We don't necessarily need to be at Hialeah for the first race. I do however want to partake in the flamingo flight. By fourth race I believe.

Re: Hialeah Park
Works for me. THe other option would be to meet and park at the Grove Metro station since that's right near Carlos.

Re: Hialeah Park
That sounds better.
My version would have involved a RT walk between the Metro and Brickell Key.

Hey Blackie, you dont need a Daily Racing Form, which are as scarce in Miami as a virgin on SoBe. Each track sells its own program with PP's within. And they sell a Simulcast program for other tracks including Gulfstream. I consulted with my QH informant on my hoss blog and he says to check out: www.aqha.com/racing/RacingLeaders.aspx
to see what sires are breeding winners. Also, a T Bred, Favorite Trick, is 97th on the list of sires of winners. When I was a fireman(no gals back then) on Engine One at 12 st and Wash. Ave.., on duty on a Sat., and the chief and city engineer liked to play the nags; of course I volunteered to drive them. The engineer could pick some pretty good longies. When my new bride called to chat, and they told her I wasnt there, she was in a panic. She suspected something sinister until the guy on watch told her about my extra duty job of driving the chief to Hialeah. Ones was a great station, albeit the longest pole in the country, and one new years eve, i got the call for afire, and half the guys were across the street in a Wash. Ave. bar. - Talk about rounding up the troops......... clocker sid

I've heard a lot about that park I wanted to go check it out some time I don't think I have ever been inside of it.

I'm in! And I'm bringing my camera. I'll call the track to see if I can film the flamingo flight.
Carlos & I are working on a short about pre-Cuban Hialeah history. I'm sure the track will be part of it though our excursion won't make it into the video because my deadline is beforehand. Going to History Miami tomorrow to scan some vintage photos.
