I ride bicycle because I can eat chocolate cookies
I would like to hear the best or most clever reasons to ride a bike. I say, you don't have to pay attention to stupid diets. But the best reason is that you are actually hungry and you can eat whatever you want.
And that's a powerful reason to ride a bike.
(I'm sipping black coffee and munching on chocolate cookies as we speak --fuel for a long bike ride)

I ride a bike so I don't have to pay to park or run a car in Miami. Plus, it's fun. Who wants a stressful commute in traffic when they can chill out on a beach cruiser?

I ride a bike to train. And, yes, training allows me to eat more or less whatever I want.
I also ride it because I'm good at it, and I rather enjoy passing people on the road.

If I could eat cookies, I would. Find me a good gluten free cookie and I can eat a whole box. But I do not ride my bike so I can eat. My bike doesn't go fast enough for that, plus all the bumps in the crap South Beach streets are too jarring to go that fast!

i ride bike and/or skate to the gym; as my cardio warmup, & cooldown on the way home, because i LOATHE stationary bikes and treadmills. Back when i didn't have a car my bike was my main form of transportation, and i just can't wrap my mind around 'spinning' classes....riding a bike that doesn't GO anywhere is just annoying, it makes no kinda sense to me. lol.
also cause it's a fun and excellent way to keep the legs and behind in good shape; i was NEVER more fit then when i rode the bike everywhere.
and sometimes also cause it's easier than having to park the car.

Catt - I actually prefer a treadmill than a bike. With the latest models that are out, I can actually watch a ballgame or something and get a nice work out. Tonmorrow morning I plan to see some Davis Cup Tennis action during my stationary workout.

I only run on a treadmill if it is cold and rainy outside. I ride my bike though come rain come shine! It is that or the bus, and I don't like taking the SoBe local.

You are a prime candidate for a trike, an old people's trike.

Tread mills or stationary bikes are my 1st choice when it comes to cardio... One real good reason is because your always in place, never having to run back ,or ride back to get to your house or car...

If you live in Miami, though, isn't using stationary exercise equipment kinda defeating part of the purpose of lviing here? I feel guilty every time I run on a treadmill, especially this time of year. Like "THere are people in Wisconsin who would KILL to be able to run outside right now."

Valid point !
Does it count though if your gym in Miami faces Biscayne Bay ?

I enjoy riding a bike because it's a more interactive way of seeing the world.

Re: I ride bicycle because I can eat chocolate cookies
I ended up doing 90 minutes on an exercise bike yesterday because of the damn weather. Ruins my shoes every time it rains too, because they get moldy and stink up my whole house.
I did not move here for the friendly people or the ease of lifestyle. This sh!t needs to stop.

Being able to run and bike outside all year round is one of the things I'm most excited about!!

Not to hijack the thread at all, but how is the Miami roadbiking/mountain biking scene? I've been mountain biking off and on for awhile now and am thinking about getting a road bike. From my brief experience in driving in Miami, road biking around town seems like suicide.

Pretty congruent question if you ask me.
For the roadster option, Key Biscayne is perhaps your best option. It's inundated with bikers on weekends. Great ambience and ocean views. The key is getting to Alice Wainwright if your hitching your bike to a car and finding parking. That is the majority launches their ride from.
If you're looking for a little turbulence on your ride,
Oleta Park, just north of Miami, suprisingly has some decent off road trails.
Oleta River State Park3400 N.E. 163rd Street
North Miami, Florida 33160(305) 919-1844
Oleta River State Park currently has over 10 miles of challenging, intermediate mountain bike trails. For the beginner, there are over 4 miles of novice trails and 3 miles of paved trail. The paved trail also offers great conditions for roller blading. The park is very conscious about safety on the trails and provides a bicycle helmet loaner system for those who forget their bicycle helmets.
If you want something unique and on the wild side, Shark Valley, on the eastern edge of thge Everglades is pretty rewarding.
The fifteen mile paved trail, offers great views of the indigenous Everglades' flora and fuana. Roadside gators( along the banks) are plentiful. At the middle of the run, a break at the oberservation tower offers a great vantage for veiwing wildlife stewing in the water's below.

Re: I ride bicycle because I can eat chocolate cookies
The Rickenbacker is really your ONLY option for extended road biking in the City. Which sucks. You can go way down to South Dade and bike on the roads around the farmland and you're usually ok. Not many cars there between the Zoo and Homestead. But if you live in the eastern parts of the city, that's even harder to get to.
