Default Let's go to the bet on some ponies ( meet-up )

I've been so out of touch with Horse Racing since I moved to FL to the point, I'm mystified. Going to the track was a regular occurrence for me. Was actually addicted to it and was a four day a week regular. I actually knew all the intricacies and intangibles. I was a disciple of the Voegele Method back then.

Out of the Blue, I got an alert that today is the 20th anniversary of my father's passing. Totally forgot. Anyways ... after the throng accompanied his mortal remains in front of his mausoleum slot, and left, I requested we open up the coffin. Earlier that morning, I went to early bird betting at Hollywood Park and purchased a pari-mutual on every horse running the Kentucky Derby that afternoon. Placed all tickets in his coat pocket and Racing Form under his arm. He went out a winner. So today I have a tinge of nostalgia, this first Saturday in May.

I've been to Gulfstream a few times, once to Calder and went with Maria de Los Angeles to Hialeah. The latter I doubt they'll rehabilitate. They where running quarter horses and not sure if they still are. One of Miami's treasured gems.

So I'm thinking: We haven't had a meet-up in ages. I hosted two and was present at Gus's and Michelle's home for USA vs. GRB World Cup game. Meet-up's seemed to have gone away.

I think a day at the races is a good meet-up idea. Let's toss that around. I'd prefer Gulfstream over Calder any day. Chime in, peeps.

So ..... this horse Nyquist seems to have done everything on both coast's, including the Florida Derby at GS. He's the favorite at 3-1. The maiden in the field is called Trojan Nation , so that obviously has me curious and my hunch bet. Not sure, but another Derby horse with USC connections is common. Keck Foundation and all that.

Going to download the PF and invest 20 mins, and maybe call my bookie

That was a long intro to organize a meet up! Was it on Saturday? Or just the theory of it? We don't really do them anymore simply as a lot of people moved and Gus and Michelle had a baby so their weekends are family time these days when are you next in Miami?

Gulfstream is very nice.... as is Hialeah.

I love stopping by on weekends and seeing the horses before they race, such beautiful creatures.
Plus its free to watch and ends very quick (Perfect for those with short attention spans).

we had a nice meetup planned last year until Matt bailed on us and there hasn't been any talk since sadly.

I was really craving that all you can eat fried chicken at Michys and I ended up finally going with a client. (it was sure worth it)

Same thing happened her. We had a quorum of four. Matt and Carlos got a last minute gig in the Keys ( I wouldn't have turned that down ) and I went with Maria de Los Angeles. Again it was only QH and though you got to see how this was a glorious track back then, it was still sad.

We'll do a meet-up off the 411 grid. I'll give some dates later on. Is Calder still even open ? Doesn't matter to me which track. My chief complaint is Gulfstream's pari-mutual board is not dedicated solely to GS and changes from one track to another too quickly. I love to key and start my DD and Triple with a maiden race, as spotting the inside money is easy and reliable.

Haven't been there in maybe nine years. It was still being worked on.

Marc: here is the link to the Hialeah meet-up that never was. Hialeah Park

The only profit I made that day was 2 for one beers. Lost a few buck and my Serengeti sun glasses glasses at Hialeah. Too much flipping between readers and sun glasses.. so it was bound to happen.

In regards to my last visit to Gulfstream, it's the only time my eyes laid on Trump. His horse won the feature that that.

It's a nice track and I love chilling by the where the jockey's mount. It would be nice though if horse players had access to the paddock area like the majority of tracks.

What surprises me is I blocked of horse racing since I moved to FL and it was an integral part of my routine back home. Been to off-track at Sanford, but never to Tampa Downs. Been to all of 3 of Miami's tracks. I sense, Calder now only offers casino games.

Like in LA, the major track has gobbled up the whole racing season. I loved Hollywood Park and I still get emotional every time I pass a stage of it's deconstruction when my plane approaches LAX. In one of these years, I'll glide over the home of the Los Angeles Rams.

I miss horse racing. Lets do it one of these days !

Have you been to hialeah since it reopened in 2013? Its gorgeous really, but I still prefer Gulf since you have all the shopping and restaurants as well as the fact its in a much better area.

I haven't since. If it was in operation for TB racing, I'd probably side with Hialeah over Gulfstream, which I haven't seen without scaffolding and would also like to revisit. I'd probably pick-up a brown bag from Stephen's and eat next lunch next to Seabiscuit everyday.

Yeah Gulfstream is really the best, though I agree if Hialeah ever got it together enough to do Thoroughbreds I'd opt for that instead. That said, I'm absolutely down for this. How about Memorial Day Weekend?

That Keys gig is how I ended up with Thrillist, in a round about way. So alls well that ends well.

Memorial Day weekend is 50/50. Regardless, we'll do it soon.

Rezz ( love her ) is pulling me to attend Sunset Music Festival in Tampa. She's grouped with Hardell. If I go, I'll skip day 2.

This just in .... Gulfstream is to host in January a race with what will be the largest purse in thoroughbred history. Twelve large M's.
    Good for Gulfstream.

We'll do this meet-up even if it's just three guys. It's going to happen, Marc, Matt and me. I'm totally in. Maybe Sid, if he wants to be casual.

I just remembered my last visit at Gulfstream. Trump was a minority was a minority owner of a horse that ran in the featured race. The primary owner was German. Gulfstream went along with that German theme and the 8/5 horse. German maidens serving up tall steins. All nonsense and I might have caught I glimpse of Donald J Trump in the Winner's Circle after that . In that commotion, I tried all possible to dissuade my Miami friend from dropping $200 on an 75/1 shot on the 9th race. I tried to reason what $200 means across the bridge at Cheetahs. My advise was ignored and he burned a hole in his pocket while our wives' awaited our timely return.

Damn ! I'm itching to go to a track.

Yeah MDW isn't too bad if you stay in the city. Plus I'm traveling this month so it's my only weekend to be home.

That said, when this summer works for everyone?

Off the point, but I also stay now. Its actually super quiet as everyone leaves, and the police are so strict with the visitors I find it a very enjoyable weekend!

It's funny after all our complaints, it seems the issue has been more or less solved. Interesting case study in how to manage an unofficial event.
